Foolish Mortals is the debut project of the indie Inklingwood Studios. The game is a two-dimensional point-and-click adventure game, telling the story of a search for lost treasure, which is teeming with ghosts and other supernatural phenomena.
The action is set in 1933. Its main character is Murphy McCallan, who has become obsessed with a treasure supposedly hidden in the Bellemore mansion, located on Devil's Rock - an island near the coast of Louisiana (USA). According to rumors, the house is haunted by the ghosts of wedding guests who disappeared many years ago under circumstances that are still unexplained.
Murphy McCallan sets out for Devil's Rock and becomes convinced that the rumors were true. Significantly, however, the apparitions do not seem to mind the fact that they have died. In addition, the hero notices that a certain sinister wraith has awakened along with them, and wants to get the treasure first at all costs. Everything indicates that finding it will require finding out what happened at the Bellemore mansion many years ago.
As befits a point-and-click game, the core of Foolish Mortals gameplay is solving various puzzles. To do this, you need to discover and point out with the mouse cursor interactive objects - there are more than a hundred of them throughout the game - and then find appropriate uses for them. Finding the correct solutions to puzzles allows you to move on to the following scenes - each of which is a separate background, of which there are more than seventy in the game.
These backgrounds - as well as paintings, documents and other diverse objects that can be explored - have been drawn entirely by hand. The illustrations created in this way were then animated by a professional studio specializing in this. As a result, the visuals of Foolish Mortals are very charming.
About two hours of music was recorded for the game. Moreover, playing the role of Murphy McCallan, we will encounter more than thirty fully dubbed characters (in English).
In addition, Foolish Mortals offers optional facilities for players who get stuck and don't know what to do to move on. These include the ability to highlight important locations and a hint system.
