Football Manager 26 is the twenty-second main installment of the popular manager series. This edition implements ideas originally planned for the cancelled Football Manager 25, including a port to the Unity engine and the launch of the fully licensed Premier League. This installment also features a full collaboration with FIFA.
Since its inception, the football series Football Manager has received new installments annually for almost two decades. The year 2024 brought a break in this tradition. Football Manager 25 was supposed to revolutionize the series by moving it to the Unity engine, but the developers from Sports Interactive encountered unforeseen difficulties during this operation. Ultimately, the creators decided to cancel the project, aiming to implement its concepts in a separate game the following year, titled Football Manager 26.
Football Manager 26 stands out from its predecessors due to a range of features.
Football Manager 26 has obtained an official license from FIFA (International Federation of Association Football). This has allowed the game to include competitions such as the FIFA World Cup 26, FIFA Women's World Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup. Along with these, official kits, graphics, and all other elements related to the respective tournaments have been incorporated into Sports Interactive's work.
The second innovation introduced in Football Manager 26 is the use of the Unity engine. This change is primarily reflected in the quality of the graphics, featuring new player animations (created based on motion capture sessions) and more detailed stadiums.
The developers did not hesitate to introduce changes to the user interface. They aimed to provide us with faster access to information while reducing the number of clicks. As a result, the overall experience was intended to gain in clarity and fluidity. The UI was expanded with a so-called Portal, which serves as a command center, giving us insight into key events and features such as news, calendar, contact with the staff, and world updates.
Additionally, the developers enriched their work with the world's largest football league – the Premier League. Here, we can find licensed kits, crests, and official player photographs. It is accompanied by other new leagues and countries. Complementing all this is women's football, which has been fully integrated with all systems.
In terms of mechanics, Football Manager 26 largely relies on the pillars established by its predecessors. During the game we take on the role of a football team manager and we must lead our team to successive victories.
Along the way, we manage the psychophysical form of our players, set tactics for upcoming matches, and oversee finances, selling and buying players (advanced transfer tools have been prepared for this mechanic), as well as hiring staff members.
The game boasts official licenses, which means we see real players, teams, and leagues in it. Their database is created and updated by informants operating all over the globe.
Football Manager 26 can be played solo or in multiplayer mode over the Internet.

It's odd to see a game have 27% positive reviews but still be near the top of Steam's most played games, but that's what's happening with Football Manager 26.

Significant improvements but also unexpected setbacks describe this year's edition of Football Manager. Wait for a few patches before buying.

Some of the things Football Manager 26 implements are a step forward for the franchise, such as the shift to allow tactical tweaks for every moment of the match, and the match engine is also noticeably improved. However, FM26 does not feel like an upgrade on 2024’s edition and that is down to a combination of the removed features and UI decisions. Too much information is hidden away, and the gameplay loop becomes about going from one fixture to the next and ticking them off, as opposed to before, when it became impossible not to get sucked into the drama of the world. This franchise has a fantastically loyal fanbase and they are good at seeing the bigger picture. Nobody can question the work ethic of the team at Sports Interactive and they deserve the time and space to ensure FM26 can become the first step in another successful evolution for the series.

Football Manager 26 is the first step of a new era, and as we're seeing with some of the biggest clubs in the country, any new era comes with the challenge of rebuilding and both setting and meeting expectations. Football Manager 26 can get better with updates, but I doubt that this entry will be the one to make the most of the switch to the new engine, overhauled UI and new features. It might take one or two more years for this rebuild to really meet its potential.
