A real-time strategy game developed by independent Australian studio EarthWork Games. The player finds themselves in the middle of a war fought between three sides. They all are trying to gain access to the limited oil supplies. The action is presented by using a side perspective and the player is tasked with constructing the titular forts. After constructing, they must be defended.

Due to the fact that the story layer is rather unimportant in Forts, the plot written by the developers is not particularly complicated. The title takes us into the future when oil reserves are close to depletion. World War broke out, with three main parties - the Eagle Empire, the Dragon Army, and the Iron Bear Covenant - playing leading roles. In the course of the game, we stand on one side of the conflict, leading it to victory over the others and, consequently, to domination over the whole world.
The gameplay premise in Forts is slightly different from what other RTS have the players accustomed to. During the game, we observe the action from the side, and our task is to build from scratch the eponymous forts and defend them, as well as destroy the fortresses belonging to our enemies. It is worth to notice, that we build the forts on the resources that are required for the completion of our mission - therefore sometimes we need to build them in quite imaginative places: under a rock shelf, just above a cliff or in a narrow gap between rocks. Things are further complicated by the fact that this also applies to buildings of our adversaries - the specificity of the map sometimes requires the development of unusual tactics.
We use the aforementioned raw materials for the development of technology tree, which enables us to acquire an increasingly destructive arsenal - apart from infantry fighting at our side, a fort can be protected by, for example, laser guns or rocket launchers. Another help are the commanders, equipped with individual passive skills to increase our combat potential, and a powerful special skill.
Forts offers a single-player campaign with twenty-eight missions. Apart from that, there is also a battle mode, where we can fight both AI and a maximum of seven players in an online multiplayer, which includes, among other things, co-op and team deathmatch modes. All this is complemented by a special editor that enables us to create our own maps; the title also supports modifications developed by players.
Two-dimensional visuals of Forts present high quality. The devs decided to employ cartoonish style and rich colors. Noteworthy is the advanced physics engine, which ensures that the forts disintegrate in the most realistic and eye-catching way possible.
