Friday Night Funkin' is an open-source musical rhythm game developed by Cameron "Ninjamuffin99" Taylor, David "PhantomArcade" Brown, Isaac "kawaisprite" Garcia, and evilsk8.

Plot

The player takes on the role of a young man known only as The Boy, whose goal is to get a date with the girl he loves. To do this he must defeat many rivals for the heart of the chosen one in musical battles.

Mechanics

Friday Night Funkin' is a rhythmic music game inspired by console and machine classics like Dance Dance Revolution or PaRappa the Rapper series. During each duel our rival sings a song and we try to accompany him. Arrows (left, right, up, down) flow from the bottom of the screen to the top, and we have to press their equivalents on the keyboard in the right moment.

Each mistake costs our character a piece of the life bar. If it is used up before the end of the song, we lose the duel.

Game modes

The game offers three difficulty levels and two game modes. In freeplay, we simply choose a song and try to achieve the highest possible score. In the campaign, on the other hand, we follow the hero's adventures through a week of his life, each day fighting against increasingly talented rivals.

Other information

Friday Night Funkin' was born as an experimental project developed in a few days within the gamejam Ludum Dare 47. The game turned out to be so popular that the creators continued to develop it. Its browser version even led to a renaissance of the Newsgrounds service.

The authors made their work available for free in an open-source model. This allowed the creation of a very active modding scene, where fan projects are released as stand-alone games, offering new characters and songs.
