An independent development studio headed by the well-known Hideo Kojima. The team develops games for PC and consoles, with its debut project being the original Death Stranding. Kojima Productions takes its name from the studio previously owned by Konami, which Kojima directed from 2005 to 2015.
In the spring of 2015, Konami underwent a major restructuring, which led to the departure of the renowned Hideo Kojima - the creator of the acclaimed Metal Gear Solid series - and the closure of his studio, Kojima Productions.
On December 16th, 2015, Hideo Kojima, unwilling to give up, revealed that Kojima Productions would return as an independent studio, reuniting former Konami colleagues including Yoji Shinkawa and Kenichiro Imaizumi. At that time, it was also revealed that Kojima's newly formed company would collaborate closely with Sony Interactive Entertainment, with its debut title set to launch on PlayStation 4.
Gamers had to wait until E3 2016 for the first details about the project. That was when Death Stranding was first introduced - an original open-world action-adventure game, later revealed to be set in a unique post-apocalyptic future.
The title launched on Sony's console on November 8th, 2019. Shortly before its debut, it was announced that the game would also be released on personal computers in the summer of 2020 by 505 Games. The game received widely differing reviews, with ratings from 3/10 to 10/10. However, on the day of its release, it held an average rating of 84% on Metacritic.
In late November 2019, Kenichiro Imaizumi, a producer at Kojima Productions, announced his departure from the studio, ending his longstanding collaboration with Hideo Kojima. The reasons for his decision were unknown, but it was speculated that it may have been related to conflicts with other senior staff at the company.
In July 2020, Death Stranding was released for personal computers, and in September 2021, it made its debut on PlayStation 5 as the Director's Cut version. The latter was released on PC in March 2022 and on iOS devices in January 2024.
In June 2022, a collaboration between Kojima Productions and Xbox Game Studios was announced, aiming to create a unique project that would leverage cloud technology. The sequel to Death Stranding, later called Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, was revealed at The Game Awards in December 2022. News of Kojima Productions' joint project with the Redmond giant emerged at The Game Awards 2023, with the official reveal of OD: A Hideo Kojima Game, a horror title. In January 2024, Kojima Productions announced, in partnership with Columbia Pictures, that it would be developing Physint, an action-adventure title intended to merge the worlds of video games and cinema.
