A multiplayer survival game with roguelike and RPG elements, in which we play the role of a refugee looking for shelter from monsters in an old village. In Grimmwood, we fight to survive by working together with other players. During the day, we acquire raw materials, craft items and strengthen fortifications, while at night, we repel attacks from the beasts inhabiting the forest surrounding the settlement.
Grimmwood is an original survival game with roguelike elements, designed for online coop. The game was developed by the independent studio Big Moustache Games and published by Headup Games.
The action of Grimmwood takes place in an alternative version of 16th century Europe. Refugees, fleeing from cities and villages to avoid war, come across a mysterious, abandoned village in an ancient forest. They decide to take shelter in it and start a new life. However, things get complicated with the onset of night, when dangerous creatures, previously known to them only from legends and stories, emerge from the wilderness. In order to survive the villagers must properly prepare during the day, and after dusk - bravely face the danger.
The gameplay in Grimmwood brings to mind mechanics on which many browser games are based. We do not take direct control over the character, and we interact with the game world using a sophisticated interface. Before starting the game, we create a protagonist, deciding on their gender, appearance, and advantages presented in the form of perks. We have no other choice but to join the residents of one of the villages (the settlement can accommodate up to thirty people) and start the joint struggle for survival.
During the proper gameplay, the rhythm of our actions is ruled by a day & night cycle. During the day, we primarily focus on exploration (the forest is presented in the form of a hexagonal grid, consisting of six hundred fields), resource gathering, upgrading equipment and crafting useful items or weapons, and finally repairing and strengthening buildings and fortifications. Of course, our protagonist (male or female) also needs to eat and drink, and from time to time also rest. We must regenerate their stamina, the supply of which limits the activities they undertake. At night, the hero must participate in the defense of the settlement against the attacks of monsters coming out of the forest. If our hero dies, the remaining living residents can try to resurrect him using one of the artifacts. If they fail, we will have no choice but to start again in another village, the surroundings of which are procedurally generated each time.
The key to success is cooperating with other players, making wise decisions, and if necessary - expelling from the village people who threaten the survival of the rest. On the other hand, nothing prevents us from trying to ruin the lives of the remaining residents, doing everything to harm them.
The two-dimensional graphics of Grimmwood mainly consist of interface elements and simple animations. The game is enriched by a atmospheric, instrumental soundtrack. Interactions with other players are made possible using the built-in chat.
