In video games, war is most often viewed from the perspective of a soldier or commander. Nevertheless, over the years a number of productions have appeared that allow us to look at its atrocities through the eyes of ordinary people, among others. One such title is Haifa, a hidden object adventure game (HOPA) developed by independent studio Team Ashan.
The gameplay in Haifa largely follows a pattern characteristic of the genre. In its course we watch illustrated scenes presenting certain characters and the places and situations in which they find themselves. Our task is to search for lost objects. This is important because each discovery affects the mental condition of the entire group.
In this way, we learn more and more about the individual heroes and heroines, gradually discover what happened, and push the story forward. The latter is also accomplished by following the dialogues and delving into the thoughts of the characters and participating in the development of the relationships that unite them.
Haifa takes us to the title city in Israel, which has experienced the drama of war on its own skin. The production tells the story of a small group trying to find a missing friend. To do so, they must penetrate the streets, houses and every nook and cranny of Haifa. In doing so, the story focuses not only on the search, but also on the emotional experiences of our charges.
The graphic design of the Haifa game is kept in a hand-drawn style.
