Despite the alluring and violent art, Happy Game is dragged down by simple and random puzzles, annoying screen flashes, and awkward interactions.

Shacknews: 7 / 10 by Ozzie Mejia

Those looking for a short, unsettling stroll can find one with Happy Game. One thing to note about it is that it's a short romp, able to be completed in just a few hours. There's nothing that would make me want to revisit it, but I certainly can't fault it for what it is: a seasonal treat filled with tricks.

I’m not sure whether to recommend Happy Game or not. I think most people will be disappointed with its short play time and easier puzzles. Any fan of Amanita will definitely find joy in this new direction for the studio but will maybe be let down in comparison to past titles’ puzzles. In short, Happy Game is good, people should play it, but wait for a sale.

  • Sound Design: The audio enhances the nightmarish experience, with well-crafted sound effects that contribute to the overall mood.
  • Puzzles: The puzzles are generally intuitive and serve to progress the narrative rather than challenge the player, making them accessible and enjoyable.
  • Emotional Experience: Many players appreciate the game's ability to evoke emotions and provoke thought about childhood fears and trauma through its surreal narrative and visual storytelling.
  • Short but Memorable: The game is a brief experience (around 2-3 hours) that leaves a lasting impression, with some players finding it worth replaying for achievements.

The main cons of the game

  • Short Length: Many users feel the game is too short for its price, suggesting it should be purchased on sale.
  • Simple Puzzles: While some appreciate the accessibility, others criticize the puzzles for being overly simplistic and lacking challenge.
  • Lack of Depth in Narrative: Some players find the story shallow and feel it could have explored deeper themes related to childhood trauma and fears.
  • Repetitive Gameplay: The mechanics can become repetitive, with some players expressing that the gameplay lacks variety and depth compared to other titles from Amanita Design.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Longer Gameplay: Players desire a longer experience, suggesting that additional content or levels could enhance the game.
  • More Complex Puzzles: A common request is for puzzles that are more challenging and varied, as many felt the existing ones were too easy.
  • Deeper Narrative Exploration: Users expressed a wish for a more profound storyline that delves into the psychological aspects of the protagonist's nightmares rather than simply presenting bizarre scenarios.
  • Multiplayer or Co-op Modes: Some players noted the absence of multiplayer or co-op options, which could add to the experience.

Summary

  • Overall, "Happy Game" is appreciated for its artistic vision and emotional impact, but it faces criticism regarding its length, puzzle complexity, and narrative depth.
