IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover Blitz Edition is an enhanced version of the 2011 IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover. The developers from Fusion Simulations and Maddox have improved the game's visuals, added new airplanes, and perfected the damage system. Those, who own the original game on Steam have received Blitz Edition for free.
In IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover Blitz Edition, the players participate in one of the most memorable air battles of WWII – Battle of England. One gets to pilot many historical machines, including such fighters as Spitfire, Hurricane, Bf-109, Bf-110, and Fiat G-50. There are also bombers such as Junkers 88, Heinkel, Stuka, Fiat BR-20, Bristol Blenheim, and Beaufighter. In comparison to its original, Blitz Edition introduces 20 new airplanes, with the new total of 48 machines. Moreover, the game features 16 additional airplanes; however, they are controlled by the game's AI.
Also, anti-aircraft units participate in the battles. In order to succeed, one has to cooperate with the command, artillery, and radar squad. Forming squadrons and cooperation is an interesting element in the game, as each pilot has unique features, style, and favorite tactics. After becoming familiar with them, the player can select particular pilots for appropriate missions.
The result of a battle depends on the pilots' skills but also such elements as changing weather conditions and physics. One has to consider that flying too close to a hostile machine might end up with turbulence. Pilots can also use clouds for cover and have to watch out for dazzling sunlight.
The battles take place on a large (350x350 km) map divided into several most important locations including London, southeast England, the English Channel, northern France, and parts of Belgium. Additionally, unlike the original version of the game, Blitz Edition offers winter and autumn versions of the map.
IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover Blitz Edition offers single-player campaign and scenario editor. Moreover, one can enjoy the multiplayer mode for up to 100 players.
In comparison to its original, the Blitz Edition offers improved visuals based on DirectX 11 libraries. The game features improved airplane models, damage system, and more appealing locations.
