Fulqrum Games / 1C Entertainment is a developer and publisher.
1C Entertainment is an international group involved in creating and distributing video games - both digital and physical - while also offering a range of specialized services for outside publishers and development teams.
The company's origins go back to 1991, when 1C Company first began its operations. In its early years, the company, owned by Boris Nuraliev, concentrated on developing utility, business, and educational software. This situation changed only after 1996, when 1C Company turned its attention to video game publishing. Over time, this part of the business would grow to become the company's primary focus. In the years that followed, it expanded its activities beyond creating and publishing its own internally developed titles, taking on the distribution and publishing of projects from external studios as well.
1C Company's first major publishing breakthrough came with the RPG Konung: Legends of the North. The game arrived in 1999 and was met with a positive reception from both players and critics.
In 2001, IL-2 Sturmovik made its way to store shelves, becoming the first Russian-developed AAA production to earn worldwide acclaim. The project kicked off a series that would continue to grow and evolve in the years that followed. Interestingly, 1C Company and Maddox Games, the original developer, didn't part ways until 2011, when Maddox was replaced by 1C Game Studios, created in partnership with 777 Studios. In 2003, Pirates of the Caribbean turned out to be a major success, arriving as a sequel to the well-received Sea Dogs.
The strong performance of many titles released under the company's banner enabled 1C not only to solidify its position in Russia but also to begin expanding onto the international stage. In 2005, as part of this expansion, 1C purchased the Czech publishing and distribution company Cenega. This move prompted a rebranding to 1C Publishing EU in May 2007. In 2018, it changed its name once again, this time becoming 1C Entertainment. It's worth noting that, along with Cenega, 1C Company also absorbed its Polish branch, Cenega Poland, which was later renamed Cenega S.A..
In 2007, Men of War, a real-time strategy game set during World War II, debuted. The title was both a critical and commercial hit, and it was expected to lead to numerous expansions and sequels. It's worth noting that the groundwork for this series was laid by Soldiers: Heroes of World War II, released in 2004. A similar fate awaited King's Bounty, released in 2008. The production, inspired by the Heroes of Might and Magic series, was a big hit and spawned another series for the publisher to develop in the following years. In 2012, 1C launched its first MMORPG, Royal Quest.
Although 1C Entertainment mainly publishes games from its own studios, its catalog also includes many titles developed by external teams. Among these are Polish games like Realpolitiks and Ancestors: Legacy.
In 2022, the company was going through major changes. On February 25th, the day after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, 1C Entertainment shifted ownership from 1C Company to the Chinese giant Tencent. Then in June, it was announced that 1C Entertainment would be renamed Fulqrum Games. The new name was intended to show developers collaborating with the studio that it would serve as a dependable partner (derived from fulcrum – a point of support).
