Jitter is a space action game where you become an artificial intelligence controlling a spaceship. You'll explore a mining colony built within an asteroid field, engaging in combat with enemies, and managing your ship by installing various modules and overseeing your crew.
Creators of science fiction works tend to scare us with artificial intelligence, which could lead to the annihilation of humanity if it deems such a solution optimal. The independent Ukrainian studio Berko Games, in their space action game titled Jitter, proves that this isn't always the case. An advanced AI can ensure the safety of the people under its care... or at least most of them, as long as it doesn't threaten the success of its main mission.
In Jitter we watch the events from a bird's-eye view.
During the game we take on the role of an experimental AI that controls a spaceship operating in an asteroid belt, where a mining colony is located. As we carry out the tasks set before us, we explore this piece of the cosmos, gather modules to expand our ships and bases, rescue survivors and add them to our crew, and fight against opponents, including both pirates and alien life forms.
The battles in the game require not only dexterity and reflexes from us, but also a tactical sense. Objects such as ships, facilities, and asteroids are susceptible to destruction, which can be used to our advantage. It is important to remember that our opponents have the same capability. Combat takes place on two levels – externally, where we control our ship, and internally, on board, where we issue commands to our subordinates.
And speaking of the crew – among its members, key figures take the lead, each with their own story, personality, and skills that affect the gameplay. It is not worth risking their lives, as the death of the main character is equivalent to the end of the game.
The game provides us with a wide range of modifications that we can apply to our ship. We can expand it with various modules, as well as discard them when necessary (for example, when we need to escape from enemies and want to get rid of components that slow us down). Alternatively, we can manage power by calibrating and redirecting oxygen and power to the modules we need the most at any given moment (which may involve sacrificing less critical crew members).
The graphic design of Jitter is kept in a pixel art style. Due to its color scheme, it is reminiscent of computer games from the end of 1970s and the beginning of 1980s.
