A game about traveling that combines 2D and 3D graphics in an original way. In Journey Express traveling between locations is presented from the side, while exploration and gathering supplies for the future journeys (hunting, fishing, looting) are shown from first person perspective.

There are fewer games strictly about traveling than one might think. Among them is Journey Express, an adventure title with survival elements developed by the independent studio Starcat Games, founded by Erick Harding.

Combination of 2D and 3D

In Journey Express we take control of travelers whom we must guide across vast territories, as a new home awaits them at the end.

The game uniquely combines 2D and 3D graphics. Travelling between locations is presented from the side in a classic pixel art style. However, when we reach one of these places, the camera shifts to a first-person perspective (FPP), and the graphics transition to full 3D in a low poly style (with individual elements consisting of a relatively small number of polygons).

Gameplay

The adventure takes us through grassy plains, deserts, and mountain peaks, and we choose the direction ourselves. In the locations we pass, we must make stops to rest from the hardships of the journey and replenish supplies for the road ahead. We can hunt wild animals, fish, search for valuable items, and in some cases, earn money and stock up on medicine.

All of this is important because it affects the team's morale, which is one of the key factors influencing the pace of travel. Other factors include the daily cycle, variable weather conditions, and events in which we participate. Our reputation also plays an important role, as it gradually restores respect to our name, which has been tarnished over many generations.

Since there is no shortage of dangers, our characters can have accidents, fall ill, and die. In such cases, their successors take over and continue the work they started.
