Karmaflow: The Rock Opera Videogame for PC is an original, independent fantasy game which combines mechanics of traditional 3D platformers with a plot presented in the form of an epic rock opera. Karmaflow was created by Basecamp Games - a studio founded by former members of such teams as Guerilla Games, Ronimo Games, or Triumph Studios. The creators had got financial support on the Indiegogo platform.
The player assumes the role of a dumb character known as Karmakeeper. He is responsible for maintaining the balance between different worlds. During the journey, the player visits five different lands guarded by beings that led their worlds to a collapse as a result of bad karma. The protagonist's goal is to fight the disharmony present in these areas through controlling the flow of karma in particular lands. In practice, this leads to draining good energy from living beings (such as plants) and using it against the unyielding evil.
Karmaflow: The Rock Opera Videogame for PC is played from a third-person view and the mechanics present resemble classic 3D platformers. Thus the player explores the game world, jumps and slips between places where objects in a need of good energy are located. From time to time, the player encounters a boss, and each of the battles against them is slightly different. The lack of any head-up display here is one of the more characteristic elements of the experience. All the information necessary (such as the amount of energy the player has to deliver to a specific object) is visible on the protagonist's back. An important part is played here by music, for it is not only a tool of illustration, as the soundtrack changes its tone depending on the player's actions; also, the vocals produced by NPCs the player encounters acquaint the player with the plot and provide them with a series of incredibly useful hints. Interestingly, the game's tutorial was also created in a sang form.
Karmaflow: The Rock Opera Videogame for PC offers average-quality visuals conveying a surrealistic art style. As befits a rock-opera, the game's strongest spot lies within its soundtrack - plenty of musicians and singers connected mainly to symphonic metal took part in the recordnig sessions. The player will find here mainly such artists as Simone Simons and Mark Jansen (Epica), Dani Filth and Lindsay Schoolcraft (Cradle of Filth), Mark Hudson (Dragonforce), Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy), Elize Ryd (Amaranthe), Charlotte Wessels (Delain), Mariangela Demurtas (Tristania) or Tony Kakko (Sonata Arctica). These are accompanied by such bands as Within Temptation or After Forever, as well as the acclaimed Dutch Metropole Orkest - above all, a Grammy winning orchestra.
