Koira is the debut project of the independent team Studio Tolima from Brussels. The release of this adventure game was handled by the company Don't Nod (known primarily for the first two installments of the Life is Strange series). The game transports us to a fantasy forest and allows us to take care of a puppy.

Gameplay

In Koira we view the events from a bird's eye view.

Forest adventures

Adventure leads us through forest glades, hills and caves. Exploring these places, we interact with the forest inhabitants and get to know them better, helping them solve their problems, as well as complete puzzles (often requiring the participation of both our character and her dog).

CGMagazine: 8 / 10 by Eduard Gafton

While it does nothing wholly original, Koira achieves exactly what it sets out to do: tell an emotional tale and build a strong foundation for Studio Tolima's future titles.

Checkpoint Gaming: 8.5 / 10 by Cass Barkman

A touching fable of companionship, Koira is a strong debut title whose thoughtful design belies its simple presentation. Its charming use of music over dialogue, affection for small, quiet moments and simple but clever mechanics create an affecting journey through and with nature.

Analog Stick Gaming: 7.5 / 10 by Jeff M Young

Koira has an emotional journey at its core that has made me better appreciate the bond I share with my own dog, and that despite obstacles being in our way, that bond will see us through. The short adventure can see a few mechanics used a bit too often, but the few moments that stand out do shine a light on the darkness plaguing Koira’s surroundings.

  • Sound Design: The game's soundtrack and sound effects are noted as immersive and integral to the storytelling, enhancing the emotional experience without the use of dialogue.
  • Emotional Storytelling: Players appreciate the game's ability to convey deep emotional connections and narratives through visuals and music alone, making it a touching experience, especially for dog lovers.
  • Interactive Gameplay: The game offers engaging mini-games and interactions with the dog, such as playing fetch, hide-and-seek, and dressing the dog in hats, which help build a bond between the player and the character.
  • Accessibility: The puzzles are generally easy and intuitive, allowing for a relaxed gaming experience that emphasizes exploration and emotional engagement rather than challenge.

The main cons of the game

  • Short Playtime: Many players feel the game is too short (around 3-5 hours), which may not justify the price for some.
  • Stealth Mechanics: The stealth elements are often criticized for being inconsistent and frustrating, with some players experiencing difficulty determining when they are hidden from hunters.
  • Limited Replayability: Once the story is completed, there is little incentive to replay, aside from experiencing the emotional journey again.
  • Lack of Challenge: While the simplicity can be a pro, some players desire more complex gameplay and puzzles.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Collectible Tracking: Players suggested the addition of a feature to track collectible items, such as hats, to make 100% completion easier.
  • More Varied Music Tracks: Some users noted that the reliance on a single main music track throughout the game could become monotonous.
  • Enhanced Stealth Mechanics: Improvements in the stealth system to clarify visibility and detection would enhance gameplay.
  • Additional Guidance: A clearer tutorial or guidance system could help players navigate the game's mechanics better, especially during stealth sections.

Summary

  • Overall, Koira is celebrated for its emotional depth, artistic presentation, and charming gameplay, though it faces criticism for its short length and some gameplay mechanics.
