Atomstring Games is an independent Chinese development studio. The team made its debut on the global map of the video game industry with a metroidvania production realized in the form of a platform action game, entitled Kotama and Academy Citadel.
In Kotama and Academy Citadel, events are viewed from the side. During the gameplay, we take control of the title character, who travels through the Carmel Academy Citadel. Exploring the nooks and crannies of the place, the protagonist faces platform challenges and confronts the enemies lurking in front of her.
Both on the battlefield and during the exploration, Kotama has to show dexterity and reflexes, as well as make good use of her abilities. Among the latter, the leading skills are those related to liquids, which allow the girl to overcome obstacles, avoid traps and attack enemies, led by powerful bosses.
Clashes with the latter are dynamic, and the key to success on the battlefield is to effectively attack with the weapons you have and juggle Kotama's "skills." Among them you'll find Fluid Detonation, which makes the liquid covering the target explode, dealing high damage.
As we progress, we acquire better weapons. In addition, we increase Kotama's combat potential by unlocking new skills, as well as customizing special Memocards that provide various bonus effects.
The ability to reverse time deserves a separate mention. It allows us to return to already visited locations to gain access to places that were previously closed to us with the help of acquired items and skills. There, new challenges await us, led by puzzles that allow us to learn more about Kotama and the Academy.
The main character of the game Kotama and Academy Citadel arrives at Carmel Academy as part of a student exchange. Uncovering a century-old conspiracy, Kotama learns more about the nature of the place and also learns more about herself. Along the way, the protagonist forms friendships with other female students whom she can help by discovering their stories and gaining loyal allies.
The game's visuals for Kotama and Academy Citadel are kept in a manga style and made in 2.5D.

Game Ratings for Kotama and Academy Citadel Video Game.
Cubed3: 7 / 10 by Eric Ace
A fairly by-the-book platformer where gameplay never goes to any great heights or depths. Certain small aspects regarding platforming and combat can occasionally become annoying, but these negatives aside, the art and general charm of the game is quiet compelling. The story hints at some dark sci-fi plots, and exploration is satisfying, if sometimes annoyingly difficult. The characters are especially attractive with their highly animated visual novel portraits, which gives a sense of life this genre often doesn't have. Overall, though, Kotama and Academy Citadel feels like it needed more cohesion to really come together.
GamesCreed: 3.2 / 5 by Wasbir Sadat
There are a lot of different things in Kotama and Academy Citadel. It has a great combat system, a smart way to heal, and a strong visual personality through the way the characters are designed. Plus, it has rough platforming, a story that isn’t focused, technical problems, and systems that aren’t fully developed and never quite reach their full promise.
XboxEra: 7.8 / 10 by Genghis Husameddin
Kotama’s game doesn’t always nail every aspect that same of the greats of the genre do, but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t have a solid combat system, boss fights, and excellent visuals and information relaying. This is a solid Metroidvania title to add to your ever-increasing backlog.
