Labyrinth of the Demon King is an action-adventure dungeon crawler, enriched with distinctly outlined elements of survival horror games. J.R. Hudepohl, an independent developer from New Zealand, is behind the creation of this game.

Gameplay

In Labyrinth of the Demon King we view events from a first-person perspective (FPP).

Fighting grotesque enemies

During the game, we explore the titular maze erected by the Demon King, and our main activity is fighting opponents. We make use of both melee weapons, such as katanas or naginatas (a type of pole weapon), as well as bows or muskets. On our way, we encounter grotesque opponents in the form of Yokai, which are demons from Japanese folklore.

Combat takes place in real time. We must not only launch attacks with weapons and kicks, but also parry blows and perform dodges. The matter is complicated by the fact that we have a limited amount of stamina, which gradually regenerates. It is worth keeping its indicator at an optimal level, so as not to be caught off guard by the opponent.

Exploration of the labyrinth, puzzles and characters

During exploration, we also need to look carefully for useful items. We can find both armors and talismans that increase our chances of survival, as well as various hints. These last ones are especially useful when solving puzzles that block our way forward. From time to time we meet NPCs with whom we can talk, and sometimes also trade.

Labyrinth of the Demon King offers familiar first-person retro dungeon crawling, but distinguishes itself with its overpowering-almost unbearable-mood of dread.

Nintendo Life: 8 / 10 by Mitch Vogel

Labyrinth of the Demon King does a great job of providing an authentic action-horror, dungeon-crawling experience that feels like it's straight out of 1997 in all the best ways. The eerie, lo-fi visuals, punishing combat, and disorienting dungeon layouts all combine to make for a maze worth solving. We'd give this one a strong recommendation to any fans of Soulslike games who want to try something with similar traits, but that also feels different in some key ways. This is a great experience if you're willing to stick it out and learn its intricacies.

It’s great for developers to try a new idea, and for a New Zealand dev to move to Japan, get inspired by the world and craft an original game in a unique setting is a feat, and kudos for that. Labyrinth of the Demon King is going to be fun for the right crowd who enjoy getting brutalized by things beyond their control and hoping for the best in what felt like an arbitrary generation of items and consumables. For me, though, this was a disappointing, frustrating and honestly exhausting waste of my time. Have fun storming the castle, I’m going back to bed.

The main pros of the game

  • Atmosphere and Aesthetics: The game is praised for its strong PS1-era horror aesthetic, with a grimy, oppressive atmosphere reminiscent of classics like Silent Hill and King's Field. The sound design and music contribute significantly to the immersive experience.
  • Engaging Puzzles: Many users found the puzzles to be enjoyable and well-integrated into the gameplay, providing a satisfying sense of discovery.
  • Combat Mechanics: While some found it clunky, others appreciated the depth of the combat system, which includes dodging, parrying, and various weapon types. The combat encourages skill development over time.
  • Nostalgic Appeal: Fans of retro horror games appreciated the homage to classic design and gameplay mechanics, making it a nostalgic experience for many players.

The main cons of the game

  • Inconsistent Difficulty: The game starts off challenging but becomes easier as players progress, leading to some complaints about the lack of challenge in later areas and boss fights.
  • Level Design Issues: Users reported that the second and third towers felt rushed and less polished compared to the first tower, with repetitive environments and excessive backtracking that detracted from the experience.
  • Combat Frustrations: Some players found the combat mechanics inconsistent, with issues such as unresponsive controls and enemies that could stun-lock players, leading to frustration.
  • Short Length: Many reviews noted that the game is relatively short (around 6-8 hours), with some feeling that it lacks replay value and should be priced lower.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • New Game Plus Mode: Players expressed a desire for a New Game Plus mode to enhance replayability and offer new challenges.
  • Improved Inventory Management: Users mentioned the inventory system could be more streamlined, as it currently feels messy and cumbersome, making it difficult to manage weapons and items effectively.
  • More Visual Cues: Some players felt that the game needed better visual cues to help distinguish areas and guide exploration, particularly in the maze-like environments.
  • Enhanced Map System: There were suggestions for a more intuitive map system that would allow players to uncover areas as they explore, rather than having everything fully mapped out from the start.

Summary

  • Overall, "Labyrinth Of The Demon King" is seen as a promising indie title that successfully captures the essence of retro survival horror, but it also faces criticism for its pacing, combat mechanics, and level design inconsistencies.
