Do you want to feel like a detective? Do other games keep giving you ‘all-seeing vision'? Do you wish you could actually solve problems on your own (more-or-less)? Look no further.

The Nintendo Switch port of Lamplight City is a compelling graphic adventure mystery.

Pure Nintendo: 5.5 / 10 by David Temple

Like many of the adventure puzzle games after which it's patterned, Lamplight City comes across as a bit lackluster in both story and presentation. Retro adventure gamers may enjoy working their way through it, but I wouldn't bank on it.

The main pros of the game

  • Engaging Story and Characters: Players appreciate the well-written narrative, engaging characters, and the intricate web of mysteries that unfold throughout the game. The dialogue is often highlighted as witty and enjoyable.
  • Atmospheric Visuals: The pixel art style and detailed environments effectively capture the steampunk aesthetic, contributing to a rich atmosphere that enhances immersion.
  • Voice Acting: The game features strong voice acting that adds depth to the characters and overall experience.
  • Unique Gameplay Mechanics: The absence of a traditional inventory system allows for a focus on dialogue and observation, which many players found refreshing. The ability to make mistakes that affect the story's outcome adds to the game's replayability.
  • Replay Value: The branching narrative and multiple endings encourage players to replay the game to explore different outcomes based on their choices.

The main cons of the game

  • Pacing and Dialogue-Heavy: Some players found the game slow-paced and overly reliant on dialogue, which could detract from the gameplay experience for those expecting more traditional puzzle-solving.
  • Potential for Progress Lock-Out: Players noted that certain dialogue choices could lead to dead ends or unsolvable cases, which could be frustrating and lead to a feeling of being unfairly penalized.
  • Character Development: A few reviews mentioned that some characters felt flat or underdeveloped compared to the main leads, which could impact overall engagement with the story.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Inventory System: While some appreciated the lack of an inventory, others felt that having one could enhance the gameplay experience by allowing for more traditional puzzle-solving elements.
  • Feedback on Case Outcomes: Players expressed a desire for clearer feedback on their performance in solving cases, such as a summary of correct or incorrect accusations, to provide a sense of closure and achievement.
  • Variety in NPC Interactions: Some users noted the repetitiveness of NPC interactions, suggesting that more dynamic responses or variations in character behavior could improve immersion and realism.

Summary

  • Overall, "Lamplight City" is well-regarded for its storytelling, atmosphere, and unique approach to detective gameplay, though it may not satisfy players looking for a more classic point-and-click adventure experience with traditional puzzles and inventory mechanics.
