Lamplight City for PC is a classic point-and-click adventure game developed by Grundislav Games and published by Wadjet Eye Games, known for working on popular titles such as Primordia and Technobabylon.
Plot
In Lamplight City for PC, a player gets to explore a fictional city of New Bretagne, which with its setting resembles Victorian England. The main protagonist of the game is Miles Fordham – a private detective with experience of a police investigator, who is trying to solve the mysterious murder of his former partner, who in turn talks to Miles from beyond the grave.
When working on the game, the developers drew their inspirations from the works of both Charles Dickens and Edgar Allan Poe.
Mechanics
The story campaign has been divided into five diverse cases. Each one is filled with false evidence and potential suspects. Player's decisions might have certain long-term consequences and lead to different story endings. The gameplay mechanics featured in Lamplight City for PC does not deviate much from the standards players know from other adventure games. The clear and intuitive interface is accompanied by the absence of the inventory menu, in which one usually stores the evidence – instead, the both the pieces of information and clues are saved in the special notepad.
The gameplay revolves around exploring the streets and houses located in the titular city, questioning the witnesses, and collecting pieces of evidence. A player is encouraged to explore numerous locations by the diverse styles of particular districts: the rich area of Gascoigne is inspired by the French Quarter in New Orleans, while the Worcester is inhabited by the working class.
Technical aspects
Lamplight City for PC stands out from similar games with its unique retro visuals following the pixel-art style. Despite its simplicity, both the elements of the environment and the character models are rich with details.

COGconnected: 85 / 100 by Lillian King
Lamplight City is the rare detective game where the mysteries are challenging to solve and satisfying to do so.
Pure Nintendo: 5.5 / 10 by David Temple
Like many of the adventure puzzle games after which it's patterned, Lamplight City comes across as a bit lackluster in both story and presentation. Retro adventure gamers may enjoy working their way through it, but I wouldn't bank on it.
oprainfall: 3 / 5 by Dalton McClain
Overall I liked Lamplight City, but I just felt a little disappointed. Sure the atmosphere and characters were great, and the story was fine for the most part, but looking at it critically it doesn’t do what it sets out to. You might get some enjoyment for the $14.99 this game normally costs. I really hope the developers expand on this idea more in the future, because I feel like it has a lot of potential. The issue is just that it falls a little flat in its execution. If you’re a fan of point-and-click games then I definitely recommend that you pick this one up. If you’re not a fan, I don’t think this is really going to change your mind.
