SMG Studio is an independent development team from Australia, whose most famous projects are two installments of the Moving Out series. The team stayed with the genre of social arcade games, creating LEGO Party! described here. It is a game based on the license of the titular Danish bricks.

Gameplay

In LEGO Party! elements known from such LEGO sets as Space, Ninjago or Pirates have been implemented. During the game we take control over the characters and participate in a series of diverse mini-games, trying to collect as many gold bricks as possible. As we progress, we unlock new mini-figures that we can embody, as well as various cosmetic additions, allowing us to adapt their appearance to individual preferences.

LEGO Party is a solid take on the board game genre that rarely works outside of Mario Party itself. There’s a ton to unlock, plenty of LEGO charm, and interesting board themes. It’s definitely got a lot of luck to it, but if you can look past that, you’ll find a great game to play with friends and family here.

DualShockers: 8.5 / 10 by Ethan Krieger

LEGO Party! stands tall as one of the best games ever in the competitive board game-style genre. Sure, it's derivative of Mario Party, but it also improves on many games in that series in a multitude of ways.

WayTooManyGames: 8 / 10 by Leonardo Faria

It might be completely based on Mario Party, but there are enough gameplay elements included in Lego Party to make it feel like an actual proper competitor, and not just a mere clone. To be fair, it actually borrowing a lot of elements from its famous source of inspiration actually made it stand out from the myriad of failed clones released over the past few decades, with just enough of the right innovations added to the mix.

  • Extensive Customization: Players can create unique avatars with a wide variety of options, enhancing personal connection to the game.
  • Fun and Varied Minigames: With 60 minigames available, most are well-designed and entertaining, providing a mix of skill-based challenges that appeal to different player types.

The main cons of the game

  • Limited Number of Boards: With only four boards available at launch, players feel there is not enough variety for long-term play.
  • No Matchmaking or Friend Pass: Players expressed a desire for online matchmaking to connect with others or a system that allows friends to play without everyone needing to purchase the game.
  • Repetitive Minigames: Some users noted that, despite the variety, certain minigames can feel repetitive after extended play.
  • Lack of Post-Game Awards: The absence of bonus rewards for achievements during the game (like in Mario Party) makes the end feel anticlimactic.
  • Technical Issues: Some users reported bugs, such as crashing during games or issues with lobby connections.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Online Matchmaking: Many players wish for a system to find random opponents online, enhancing the multiplayer experience.
  • Friend Pass System: A feature that allows friends to join a game without purchasing it would make the game more accessible.
  • Additional Boards and Minigames: Players are hopeful for future updates that would add more content, such as new boards and minigames.
  • Quality of Life Features: Options like skipping instructions for minigames already played, customizing game settings, and a faster pace for turns would improve the overall experience.

Summary

  • Overall, LEGO® Party! has been well-received as a fun and engaging alternative to traditional party games, especially Mario Party, but it does have areas for improvement that users hope will be addressed in future updates.
