Letter Quest: Grimm's Journey Remastered Description
Letter Quest: Grimm's Journey Remastered is the refreshed edition of the 2014 Letter Quest: Grimm's Journey, a unique combination of a logic word game and RPG with a turn-based combat system. The developers of the original game, the independent Canadian studio Bacon Bandit Games, are responsible for creating the new version.
Story
Just like in the original version of the game, the plot is not too extensive and is only a background for the gameplay. While playing, we take control of a pair of grim reapers: Grimm and Rose, who, instead of taking souls, set out to fight against other spirits and monsters. And although, as befits the personifications of death, our heroes are armed with scythes, their main weapon in confrontation with enemies will be... words arranged from letters in combat.
Mechanics
Letter Quest: Grimm's Journey Remastered uses RPG elements in a similar way to the Puzzle Quest series. However, while the latter game uses elements of the popular match-3 genre as the basis, Letter Quest used element of a verbal jigsaw puzzles based on the Scrabble board game. We watch the action from side view, and during the game we travel through five different lands and carry out story tasks. The turn-based combat system consists of creating words from the available set of blocks with letters and a dictionary, containing a total of nearly 200 thousand English words. Depending on the points gained for each of them, we deal a certain amount of damage to our opponent.
The whole thing is complemented by elements typical for RPGs - for the jewels gained in subsequent battles we can gradually improve our heroes and the weapons they possess. There is also a large arsenal of magical potions and items, which can significantly influence the course of the battles. This is an important element, as enemies also have special abilities, thanks to which they will try to tips the scales of victory on their side.
Game modes
In addition to the original campaign mode, Letter Quest: Grimm's Journey Remastered also features a completely new gameplay mode: Endless, in which, having selected a location, favorite weapon and soundtrack, we try to survive as long as possible in confrontation with hordes of enemies.
Technical aspects
Letter Quest: Grimm's Journey Remastered differs from the original mainly from the technical side. The game was rewritten based on the multiplatform Unity engine, which translated into higher resolution, better texture quality and smoother animations. The interface has not changed significantly, and while playing, almost half of the screen is occupied by the menu screen with letters, from which we arrange subsequent words. For the purpose of the refreshed edition, a new soundtrack has also been prepared, and while having fun, we can choose between the more contemporary and the chiptune background music known from the original.
