Marvel Puzzle Quest: Dark Reign, released on PC, AND, etc., is a puzzle game with RPG elements, created by Demiurge Studios, known from Shoot Many Robots. The developer has also helped in the works on such productions as Borderlands, Rock Band and Mass Effect. The title is the next installment of the popular Puzzle Quest series by Infinite Interactive studio.
The story in Marvel Puzzle Quest: Dark Reign focuses on the eternal battle between superheroes and supervillains. The action takes place after the outbreak of the Iso-8 epidemic. As a result of the fall of the meteorite on Earth, mysterious crystals have appeared in various parts of the world, increasing the power of the characters. Heroes have to face a new organization that wants to seize power over the world. The script was written by Frank Tieri (Iron Man, Wolverine, Weapon X) and Alex Irvine (Iron Man, Daredevil).
Marvel Puzzle Quest: Dark Reign is based on the same rules as the previous parts of the series. This is a combination of a match-3 puzzle and an RPG. The combat is about arranging the same elements vertically and horizontally (min. 3 pieces), which are responsible for the attack. Individual colors belong to the characters, so if we get rid of the right amount of red stones, we will power Iron Man's energy bar and he will be able to perform a special attack, dealing much more damage. The game takes place in a turn-based system, where you can gain additional moves by arranging at least 5 of the same elements next to each other.
As time passes and we emerge victoriously from subsequent battles, we gain experience points, which we spend on increasing the power of selected heroes. Also, as part of the prize, we can sometimes receive new cards with skills and access to new heroes.
The graphics in Marvel Puzzle Quest: Dark Reign have been maintained in a classic 2D style, which is well known to the fans of the series. The whole, however, reflects the atmosphere of Marvel's comic books. The game is available in a free-to-play business model with microtransactions. The game is therefore free, but with real money, you can buy gold, which is used to acquire new skills, etc. A version for mobile devices (iOS and Android) is also available on the market.
