Lorelei and the Laser Eyes is an original surrealistic adventure game. It was developed by indie studio Simogo, and was published by Annapurna Interactive.

Plot

Lorelei and the Laser Eyes takes us on a journey to central Europe, more precisely - to an old baroque manor house. We play the role of a woman who arrives here in search of answers to the questions that bother her. As she progresses, the heroine learns more and more about the events that took place here, and also meets other people staying here, such as a well-read author and a vagabond-illusionist. How her fate will turn out depends on our actions and the choices we make.

The main pros of the game

  • Atmosphere and Visuals: The game's unique art style, combining a monochromatic palette with occasional bursts of color, creates a captivating and eerie atmosphere reminiscent of David Lynch's works. The design is praised for its cinematic feel and attention to detail.
  • Engaging Puzzles: Many players appreciate the variety and challenge of the puzzles, which often require logical thinking and pattern recognition rather than external knowledge. The puzzles are well-integrated into the narrative, providing a satisfying sense of accomplishment upon solving them.
  • Compelling Narrative: While some players find the story cryptic, many appreciate its depth and the way it unfolds through exploration and puzzle-solving. The narrative is interwoven with the gameplay, enhancing the overall experience.
  • Exploration and Discovery: The game encourages players to explore its environment thoroughly, rewarding them with clues and insights that contribute to both puzzle solutions and story progression. This exploration is seen as a core aspect of the gameplay.

The main cons of the game

  • Clunky Controls: Many reviews highlight the frustrating control scheme that relies on a single button for multiple actions, making navigation and menu interactions cumbersome. The absence of a back button in menus adds to the frustration, leading to tedious gameplay.
  • Difficulty and Clarity of Puzzles: While some puzzles are well-designed, others can feel overly obscure or require extensive backtracking. Players often express frustration over not knowing whether they have the necessary information to solve a puzzle, leading to confusion and potential disengagement.
  • Pacing Issues: The game can feel slow at times, especially during backtracking through the hotel, which can detract from the overall enjoyment. Some players feel that certain sections, particularly mazes, disrupt the flow of the game.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Hint System: Many players suggest the inclusion of a hint system to assist with particularly challenging puzzles, as the current lack of guidance can lead to frustration.
  • Improved Navigation Options: Suggestions for a more intuitive control scheme and better menu navigation are common, with players expressing a desire for dedicated buttons for common actions to streamline gameplay.
  • Autosave Feature: The manual save requirement at specific locations is seen as a drawback, with players advocating for an autosave system to prevent loss of progress, especially given the game's complexity and length.
  • Accessibility Options: Some players mention the need for improved accessibility settings, particularly to address issues like motion sickness caused by certain visual effects.

Summary

  • Overall, "Lorelei and the Laser Eyes" is praised for its innovative design and engaging puzzles, but it also faces criticism for its controls and pacing, with many players expressing a desire for quality-of-life improvements.
