Lost in Harmony: Kaito's Adventure is a hybrid game created mainly for mobile platforms, combining elements of popular endless runner games with a rather rare genre of narrative music game. The title is the debut of the independent studio Digixart Entertainment, led by a long-time employee of Ubisoft and the creator of Valiant Hearts: The Great War, Yoan Fanise.
Story
The action of the game is set in an unspecified, futuristic world. Players take on the role of a young boy named Kaito, who travels on a skateboard, facing his greatest fears. Each chapter of the game represents one of his phobias, for example, fear of water, heights, or crowds. In his fight, however, the protagonist is not alone, as he is accompanied by a friend, Aya, who rides with him, holding on to the hero's back.
Mechanics
The mechanics of the game draws on the genre of endless runners and has a strong arcade element . Kaito's skateboard moves automatically and the player's task is to avoid all kinds of obstacles by turning left or right at the appropriate moments. The distinguishing element of the game is the fact that the whole thing is closely related to the songs played in the background. Music plays an extremely important role in the game - it has an impact not only on the game mechanics (e.g. avoiding obstacles to the rhythm of the background music), but first of all, it is used to tell stories and convey emotions accompanying the hero.
Technical aspects
Lost in Harmony emphasizes the audio-visual layer. The graphics of the game resemble Japanese anime productions, and the soundtrack was inspired by music from all over the world. Three composers are responsible for its preparation: Roc Chen, Mark Griskey and two-times Grammy Award winner, Wyclef Jean. Apart from that, the game features many references to pop culture, e.g. Facebook and Twitter icons appearing on the route or blocks from the iconic Tetris.
