Lumines Arise is a logic-music game, representing a unique combination of Tetris style puzzle elements with a unique audiovisual setting. It represents a series started in 2004 by the game Lumines: Puzzle Fusion. It was created by the studios Enhance and Monstars (developers of such projects as Tetris Effect or Rez Infinite). This project was finished under the supervision of Tetsuya Mizuguchi, well known to fans of the series.

Gameplay

At first glance, the gameplay in Lumines Arise doesn't deviate too much from what the iconic Tetris has accustomed us to. The game takes place on a board where blocks of two colors fall from above. Our goal is to create squares of one color from them, which are then removed, generating points for us.

Burst mechanic

All of this happens to the rhythm of music, and the squares are cleared by a timeline that regularly passes through the boards. Although we have no influence on the latter, we can take advantage of the Burst mechanic, which is a novelty in the series. It temporarily stops the cleaning of matched blocks, allowing us to further expand them and thus gain more points when the effect ends.

Locations and avatars

The game takes us to various surreal locations. Among them, we will find a jungle or the streets of Tokyo, as well as more fanciful places, like interstellar space. Our reflection in the game world is an avatar and their appearance can be adapted to individual preferences.

Game modes

We can play Lumines Arise alone or in multiplayer mode. The game offers a chance to play with other players locally or over the Internet. There is also an optional VR mode.

A revamp of Lumines which, in the spirit of Tetris Effect, amplifies its puzzling core with slick visuals, fun new mechanics, and one of the best soundtracks of the year.

TheGamer: 4.5 / 5 by Jade King

There is a reason this campaign is called Journey, because it feels like you’ve been on a rollercoaster ride of rhythmic emotions that change how you view games like this. Part of me thought Enhance Games couldn't repeat the sublime brilliance of Tetris Effect, but it has done just that and then some.

Push Square: 9 / 10 by Stephen Tailby

Following up on the brilliant Tetris Effect was no easy feat, but Enhance has done it with Lumines Arise. At its core is an excellent puzzle game with lots of depth, and mechanics that gel perfectly with the emphasis on music and spectacular visuals. It's jam-packed with fun features that provide so many different ways to play, including series-best multiplayer and a great range of challenge modes. There are some very minor gripes if we're being really picky, but fans can rest assured that this is the big, flashy comeback Lumines deserves.

The main cons of the game

  • Visibility Issues: A common complaint is that some levels have poor visibility, making it difficult to differentiate between blocks due to their colors and the background effects. This has been particularly problematic for colorblind players.
  • Input Latency: Some users have noted a noticeable input lag compared to previous Lumines titles, which can affect gameplay fluidity.
  • Soundtrack Variety: While the music is generally praised, some players feel it lacks the variety of previous Lumines games and is overly focused on a single genre (EDM).
  • Level Transitions: The game pauses between levels, which some players feel disrupts the flow of gameplay. They preferred the seamless transitions found in earlier titles.
  • Limited Modes: Some players expressed disappointment over the absence of certain modes from previous games, such as a dedicated Vs. CPU mode and the puzzle mode.

  • Classic Mode: Several players suggested the inclusion of a "classic mode" that would allow for gameplay reminiscent of earlier Lumines titles, including the return of popular songs and gameplay mechanics.
  • More Diverse Soundtrack: Players have expressed a desire for the inclusion of tracks from previous Lumines games, as well as a broader variety of musical styles.
  • Improved Accessibility Settings: While there are accessibility options, many users feel that additional settings to enhance visibility and differentiate blocks would significantly improve the experience, especially for those with color vision deficiencies.
  • Endless Mode: Some players noted the absence of an endless mode where they could play indefinitely without level transitions, which they found enjoyable in previous iterations.

Summary

  • In summary, Lumines Arise has been well-received for its visuals, audio, and gameplay, but it has faced criticism for visibility issues, input latency, and the lack of certain features from earlier games in the series.
