Lunacid is an RPG inspired by the King's Field series and the Shadow Tower game, a predecessor of the soulslike genre. This is also another title in the portfolio of Japanese horror creator Akuma Kira. This time, KIRA LLC studio prepared a dungeon crawler, wrapped in graphics reminiscent of the era of the first PlayStation.

Plot

Long ago, the Great Beast emerged from the sea and shrouded the land in poisonous fog - since then, the world of the game Lunacid has been devoid of light. The character we control is thrown into the Great Well for unknown crimes and the only salvation for them is a creature called the Ancient One, sleeping deep underground. The protagonist searches for that creature in an atmosphere of horror and desperation, traversing the darkness-shrouded underground, which were once bustling streets.

The main pros of the game

  • Atmosphere and Aesthetics: The game is praised for its dark fantasy atmosphere, reminiscent of classic PS1 games, and features a haunting soundtrack that enhances the overall experience.
  • Exploration and Secrets: Players appreciate the rewarding exploration, with numerous secrets, hidden areas, and a sense of discovery that keeps them engaged. The lack of a map encourages players to navigate and remember their surroundings.
  • Variety of Weapons and Classes: There are many classes, weapons, and spells available, allowing players to customize their playstyle and experiment with different combat strategies.
  • Nostalgic Elements: Many players feel a strong sense of nostalgia, comparing it favorably to classic games like King's Field and Shadow Tower, which resonates with fans of retro dungeon crawlers.

The main cons of the game

  • Combat Mechanics: While some find the combat satisfying, many reviews criticize it for being clunky, simplistic, and lacking depth. The combat can feel monotonous, with some bosses being unchallenging.
  • Level Design and Navigation: Some players find the level design to be overly maze-like and tedious, with a lack of clear direction leading to frustration. The absence of a map is a common point of contention.
  • Progression and Saving System: The game features a harsh saving system with no autosave, which can lead to significant time loss upon death, frustrating players who prefer more modern conveniences.
  • Pacing Issues: Some reviews mention that the game can feel slow, particularly in terms of movement speed and the need for backtracking.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Map System: Many players express a desire for an in-game map to aid navigation, especially given the complex and winding levels.
  • Auto-Save or Quick Save Feature: The lack of any form of automatic saving is a significant drawback for players, with calls for a more forgiving save system.
  • Depth in Combat and Storytelling: Some players feel that the combat mechanics and storytelling could be more engaging and varied, with a preference for more interactive quests or clearer narrative elements.
  • Quality of Life Features: Users mention that the game could benefit from more modern game design elements, such as better menus and user interface options, including key binding.

Summary

  • Overall, Lunacid is viewed as a unique and atmospheric dungeon crawler that appeals to fans of retro games, but it has notable shortcomings in combat, navigation, and modern gameplay conveniences.
