An agricultural RPG game, set in a fantasy world and inspired by British folklore. In Mandrake we play as a witch, focusing on farming and establishing relationships (both with other residents and the local deities). The game was developed by Failbetter Games studio known for the Sunless series.
Mandrake is an agricultural RPG, set in a fantasy universe inspired by British folklore. We play the role of a representative of a long line of witches practicing the forbidden art of gardening. The game was developed by Failbetter Games. We are talking about an independent development team from London, which has the Sunless series in its portfolio.
In Mandrake we watch events from a bird's eye view.
The main element of the gameplay is farming. Our female protagonist can plant, nurture, and harvest a variety of plants, ranging from vegetables (asparagus beans, turnips), through fruit trees (cherry), to more fanciful specimens, such as a ram causing thunder, or a rhewyn, which are a kind of living watering cans full of water.
We acquire new plant species by exploring the surrounding forests or wandering along the coast. There are also mines shrouded in darkness and they can lead to obtaining valuable resources. During breaks from working in the garden, we can indulge in fishing or renovating Mandrake Lodge. We can furnish our headquarters, and also decorate it with various ornaments.
Having our own place and shelter is important, because it's better not to leave the house after dark (which doesn't mean it's not possible). Long ago, the Hearth Fire Pact was signed, in which it was established that the night would belong to supernatural beings called Mara, and the darkness would be illuminated exclusively by the fire from fireplaces. We can therefore spend long evenings, reading or cooking.
Of course, our world is not limited only to our home and garden, and plants are not our only companions. In our free time, we can go to the village of Chandley and meet its inhabitants, among whom you will find the beekeeper Rosen, the hunter Gideon, or the blacksmith Nessa.
We can also establish a relationship with deities and other beings living somewhat alongside humans, like a smiling spirit trapped in a tree, long-armed Grandma Jakes, or a deity living in the chimney of our house.
The graphic design of Mandrake was maintained in a cartoon style.
