Metal Slug 2 is one of the highlights of the popular series of two-dimensional shooters by SNK. The production debuted in 1998 on Neo Geo MVS machines, and in the following years it was ported to other hardware platforms. A refreshed version of the game, titled Metal Slug X is also available on the market.
The action of the gametakes place two years after the events shown in the original Metal Slug. The main opponent of the brave warriors is once again General Morden, who not only avoided death, it once again threatens the whole world. As a result, Rossi, Roving and the two new heroes Eri Kasamoto and Fiolina Germi have to face him and his army.
Gameplay in Metal Slug 2 is based on the same principles as in the first game. Players choose one of the characters and start making their way through levels prepared by the creators. Along the way, of course, they have to deal with a number of enemies, and face a boss at the end of the level. The task is facilitated by various weapon improvements and vehicles found on maps. There is also the possibility of rescuing prisoners of war, which provides us with extra points to the final result and opens up access to new weapons and items. Among the novelties there are, among others, character transformations - e.g. in one of the missions we can turn into a mummy, which significantly limits our speed of movement and forces us to use only the pistol. In addition, Metal Slug 2 was the debut of support characters, e.g. Hyakutaro Ichimonji . If we save him, he will accompany us in battle, kicking enemies and throwing Hadoukens. Naturally, there was no shortage of new tools of carnage, including laser guns and incendiary bombs. All this is complemented by new vehicles such as Camel Slug, a Vulcan cannon mounted on a camel, and the flying Slug Flyer.
Metal Slug 2 doesn't differ from the first part or other installment of the series, all of the featuring cartoonish pixel-art visuals. The characteristic visual style of the cycle is complemented by crazy character designs and various effects related to explosions of machines, grenades, etc.
