Myst V: End of Ages is another installment in an acknowledged adventure game series originated in the early 1990s. The creators of this title, spearheaded by Randy Miller, made it approachable not only to the enthusiasts of the series but also to other players. Logic puzzles are now less demanding in order to expand the target audience.

The story picks up where Uru: The Path of the Shell left. An ancient civilization called D’ni, whose days of glory were interrupted by a massive disaster, rises up from knees thanks to the player’s efforts. It is noteworthy that live action cut-scenes were replaced with pre-rendered 3D models created in motion capture technique.

The key element of the game is the freedom in the way you explore the virtual world. Traditionally for the Myst series you can control the character using mouse only, but you can also move around like in an FPS – using direction buttons to move and the mouse to look around.

The main pros of the game

  • Visuals: The graphics are considered decent for a 2005 game, with some environments, particularly Todelmer, being described as breathtaking and visually appealing.
  • Voice Acting: The voice acting, especially for the character Esher, received positive remarks, with some considering it the best in the series.
  • Exploration: The ability to explore the environments in 3D was appreciated, providing a fun experience despite some navigation issues.
  • Story and Themes: While opinions on the story vary, some players found it to be a fitting conclusion to the series, adding depth to the overarching narrative of the Myst saga.

The main cons of the game

  • Puzzles: Many users found the puzzles to be less interesting and more straightforward than in previous entries, with some being overly reliant on attention to detail and requiring the use of guides.
  • World Building: The game was criticized for poor world-building, with Ages feeling empty and disconnected from the established Myst lore.
  • Tablet Mechanics: The drawing mechanic for interacting with the Bahro was seen as buggy and frustrating, leading to issues with puzzle completion and game progression.
  • Bugs and Crashes: Several players reported random bugs, crashes, and issues with save files, which detracted from the overall experience.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • In-Game Note-Taking and Screenshots: Unlike previous entries, Myst V does not allow for taking notes or screenshots in a useful manner, as screenshots are tied to save slots, making them impractical.
  • Depth in Puzzles: Many players expressed a desire for more complex and engaging puzzles, similar to those found in earlier Myst games.
  • Immersive World Elements: The game lacks the rich detail and immersive environments that characterized earlier entries, leading to a less engaging experience.
  • Achievements: There are no achievements in the game, which some players found disappointing compared to modern gaming standards.

Summary

  • Overall, while Myst V: End of Ages has its strengths, particularly in visuals and voice acting, it suffers from issues related to puzzles, world-building, and technical execution, leading many to view it as the weakest entry in the Myst series.
