Twin-stick shooter in which we play a girl trapped in a nightmare. To wake up, the game's main character NeverAwake has to face everything that scares her - from vegetables to mutant dogs to dentists.
NeverAwake is a twin-stick shooter in which we play a girl trapped in a nightmare. It was developed by indie studio Neotro, and was released by Phoenixx.
The main character of the game NeverAwake is a girl named Rem. Plunged into a dream, the protagonist faces her nightmares, trying to find a way to wake up. How the wanderings of our protagonist will end depends on our commitment and style of play.
NeverAwake is a side-scroller. We move through a variety of (though equally dark) stages during the gameplay and eliminate hordes of enemies. In more than 80 levels Rem encounters not only serial enemies, which she eliminates in wholesale quantities, but also much more powerful than them bosses. On the protagonist's way stand, among others, nightmarish vegetables, mutated dogs or, finally, dentists. In short - Rem faces everything that girls of her age fear. The heroine fights her opponents, making use primarily of firearms. In addition, as she progresses, the girl supplies herself with a variety of accessories, which, if properly matched with the main weapon, can significantly increase her combat potential. The latter make it worthwhile to return to already completed missions to improve your score with new tools of murder.
NeverAwake features cartoonish graphics made in a gloomy style. Attention is especially drawn to the terrifying designs of the monsters that Rem faces. We can also listen to a soundtrack full of chiptune sounds cheering for battle.

Game Ratings for NeverAwake Video Game.
WayTooManyGames: 8.5 / 10 by Leonardo Faria
These issues were minute, however. I still wholeheartedly recommend picking NeverAwake up, even if you’re just moderately acquainted to bullet hell shooters. Its gameplay is actually innovative, in a genre known for rarely experimenting with new control schemes or gameplay loops, and its visuals are just amazing, being the perfect blend of something from Tim Burton and old-school Sega. Even if its story was forgettable and its duration wasn’t that impressive, its core mechanics more than made up for any setbacks found along the way.
TheGamer: 3 / 5 by Joshua Robertson
While the levels are varied and challenging, and the story is serviceable for the kind of game NeverAwake is, they weren’t the things that had me blasting through levels to see what was next - it was the excitement of seeing what kind of horrible beastie was waiting for me around the corner. The game excels at turning the mundane into monsters and doing so manages to set itself apart as one of the more unique shoot ‘em ups out there. Add to that some demanding but entertaining boss fights and NeverAwake is a decent (yet depressing) time for any fan of the genre.
TechRaptor: 8 / 10 by Erren Van Duine
NeverAwake is a true shump to its core. Despite some repetition in enemy design, this twin-stick shooter takes on the concept of nightmares and blends it into its visual style and gameplay in a way that rewards players who come back for more.
