Jump Dash Roll: 6 / 10 by Rob Kershaw

An initially fascinating murder mystery that descends into repetition for its final two-thirds. A real shame.

Shacknews: 7 / 10 by Donovan Erskine

All in all, Night Call sets itself up with an inspired idea and premise. The concept of a man living the simple life as a city taxi driver going through regular life while trying to catch a sinister serial killer is fascinating.

The main pros of the game

  • Atmospheric Experience: The game effectively immerses players in the noir vibe of nighttime Paris, enhanced by a moody and stylish soundtrack that complements the storytelling.
  • Strong Writing and Dialogue: Many reviews highlight the well-written dialogue and engaging character interactions, making the passengers feel real and memorable. The stories shared by passengers are often intriguing and emotionally resonant.
  • Unique Concept: The premise of a taxi driver acting as a confidant and investigator allows for diverse storytelling, with a rich variety of characters and narratives.

The main cons of the game

  • Weak Detective Gameplay: Several reviews criticize the detective mechanics as being underdeveloped, with players often feeling that the investigation lacks challenge and depth. Clues are gathered passively through scripted dialogues rather than through active deduction.
  • Repetitive Structure: The game features only three murder cases that share similar beginnings and gameplay loops, leading to a lack of variety over time. This redundancy can make the experience feel stale after multiple playthroughs.
  • Technical Issues: Users report problems with performance, including high GPU usage and frame rate issues, which detracts from the overall experience.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Voice Acting: Many players express a desire for voice acting to enhance character interactions and bring the narrative to life more vividly.
  • Additional Languages: Some reviews mention that expanding language options could attract a broader audience.
  • More Complex Investigation Mechanics: Players wish for a more engaging detective experience, with opportunities for deeper analysis of clues and more meaningful choices that impact the investigation's outcome.
  • Improved User Interface: A few comments mention that the interface could be better designed for a smoother experience, particularly for a narrative-driven game.

Summary

  • Overall, while *Night Call* offers a compelling atmosphere and rich character storytelling, it falls short in delivering a satisfying detective gameplay experience, leading to mixed reviews from players.
