After designing the famous Braid and The Witness, Jonathan Blow decided to enter into cooperation with independent creators of Sokoban-style puzzle games. Order of the Sinking Star, which has been in development for about ten years, is a set of more than a thousand puzzles of this type, offering, in addition, a story thread.
At its core ,Order of the Sinking Star is a compilation of grid-based levels in which, controlling a character or characters in a top-down perspective, one must achieve a specific goal, which is usually reaching the exit. To do so, you have to push or pull objects in the right sequence.
The game's universe is divided into four fantastic zones with specific rules. For example, one of them gives you control over differently gifted character classes that can move blocks or swap places with an object or enemy. Another world uses mirrors to create paths using reflection mechanics.
Each puzzle builds on the previous one, introducing new game mechanics. When zones "collide," puzzle systems intertwine to create new possibilities. Thus, for example, classes with specific skills begin to operate in the world of mirrors, and path-creating rays of light enter into synergy with tasks involving jumping stones.
The game has an open structure, allowing any order in traversing the worlds. The plot, whose protagonists include a queen, a thief, a warrior, a wizard and a m?wing boat, is learned from collected notes.
The multicolored graphic design of Order of the Sinking Star is characterized by clear outlines of characters and objects.
