The Paper Mario series has inscribed itself in golden letters in the history of video games, but this has not brought it too many followers. Nonetheless, developers from the independent German team Cuddling Raccoons Studio decided to draw inspiration from it while creating their first game. It combines elements of RPGs, adventure titles and roguelikes and it was titled Paper Animal Adventure. The project in question was created partially thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.

Gameplay

In Paper Animal Adventure we watch the action from a bird's eye view. During the game we enter a world inhabited by the titular paper animals. We can take control of one of them and embark on a journey to find the good king of the village, who disappeared without a trace.

Paper animals

The game allows us to play as various characters, such as a chicken named Peep, a turtle named Shelp, a frog named Kwak, or a dog called Cookie. Each of these characters was assigned a specific role and equipped with unique skills reflecting their strength, defensive abilities, or supportive capabilities.

Adventures

Our journey leads us through various procedurally generated locations. While exploring them, we get to know their inhabitants, complete quests, participate in mini-games (they may include avoiding spikes and traps), solve puzzles, and also fight with opponents, among which powerful bosses are leading.

Fighting opponents

The battles take place in real time, on square grid fields. During battles, we can use both the basic "ramming" attack against enemies, as well as the special abilities of individual characters, which require prior charging.

Camping, character development and cooking.

In between major adventures, we can set up camps to heal our protagonists, use items, adjust character skills, improve their statistics, and also provide them with stickers that give them various bonuses (including rare, holographic ones that give stronger effects). Visits to the camps are also an opportunity to prepare meals that regenerate the weakened strength of the controlled characters and provide additional effects.
