Requiem is the third and the last production in the horror adventure game series of Peneumbra. It is an expansion for Black Plague, the second installment in the Peneumbra cycle and requires it to be installed in order to work. Just like last time, we assume the role of Philip and dive even deeper into a bizarre and dark world created by the developers of Frictional Games. We have to explore an abandoned research complex located in Greenland yet again, meeting some reappearing characters from the previous episodes. This time around, the situation changed, though, which forces us to ponder on whether we can still trust our old friends. The main purpose of Requiem is to conclude all of the unresolved themes from the last game.

In Penumbra: Requiem, the atmosphere is even more depressing, and the protagonist is starting to have problems with telling reality from delusion. Correctly assessing the situation is therefore key to success. Of course, as befits an adventure game, we have to solve numerous puzzles before we can see the final ending.

  • Atmosphere: The game retains a certain atmospheric quality, with some players noting a haunting, contemplative tone that reflects on the previous games.
  • Closure: A few reviewers felt that, despite its flaws, the game provided a form of closure to the story of Philip, even if it was not entirely satisfying.

The main cons of the game

  • Lack of Horror: A significant number of reviews pointed out the absence of horror elements, tension, and enemies that characterized the previous entries in the series. This shift disappointed many fans.
  • Minimal Story and Lore: Users criticized the game for having a weak plot, minimal lore development, and a confusing narrative that felt disconnected from the previous titles. Many felt it did not adequately conclude the story arcs established in "Black Plague."
  • Repetitive Gameplay: Some players found the puzzles to be repetitive and lacking in variety, leading to a less engaging experience overall.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Story Progression: Reviewers noted a significant lack of meaningful story progression and character development, which was a hallmark of the earlier games.
  • Survival Mechanics: The absence of survival horror elements, such as resource management and danger from enemies, was highlighted as a major missing feature that detracted from the overall experience.
  • Logical Connections: Players expressed disappointment with the lack of logical connections between puzzle levels, leading to a disjointed experience that felt more like a series of isolated puzzles rather than a cohesive narrative journey.

Summary

  • Overall, "Penumbra: Requiem" appears to be a divisive entry in the series, appealing primarily to those who enjoy puzzle-solving but disappointing fans looking for the horror and narrative depth found in its predecessors.
