Phantom Halls for PC Windows features typical survival horror mechanics, so you have explore the grim locations, carefully manage your resources, and fight strong enemies. However, those elements have been implemented in a unique way. First and foremost, you do not control just one character, but a group of up to three people. You choose them out of twelve available characters with unique abilities, each character a caricature of a stereotype, such as a heavy metal fan or a Tumblr feminist. In Phantom Halls, you have to face several dozens types of opponents, including boss enemies. The combat is difficult, since there isn't much ammunition to find in the manor. However, you can place various traps.

The inside of the manor is procedurally generated, so each playthrough features new challenges. The levels are based on Metroidvania-type platform games. The maps are 2D, but have an open structure, and you can only access some nooks and crannies once you obtain certain items or skills. Although the game is set mostly inside the manor, the locations are varies. Apart from more typical rooms, you can also explore flooded basements, botanical gardens, steampunk laboratories, and more.
