Predecessor

Predecessor is a new incarnation of Paragon, an action game with MOBA elements developed by Epic Games. The original game was not very successful and as a result, its servers were shut down. However, the authors of Paragon made the game's source code available in the open source model, which was used by streamer Robbie Singh, among others. Together with a group of other fans of the game, he decided to recreate this beloved game in a new form.

In January 2020, Singh founded the independent studio Omeda, which quickly got to work. This is how Predecessor came into being. The results turned out to be so impressive that the young team received non-refundable funding from Epic Games under the Epic Mega Grants programme.

Mechanics

Predecessor is a refreshed version of Paragon, so to speak, with almost identical rules. The game focuses on battles between teams of five players consisting of a variety of characters. Each player in the team must choose a different character with a unique style of combat and abilities and a role to fill, corresponding to the schemes known from games such as League of Legends or Dota 2. The main objective of the game is to destroy the enemy's base, which requires tearing through not only enemy players, but also their watchtowers and allies led by the artificial intelligence. We are rewarded with gold for our actions, using which we can buy stat upgrades for the hero or unlock more powerful abilities.

This scheme, typical for MOBA games, is varied by the arcade style of the gameplay. Instead of a strategy with an isometric view, we get a third-person action game in which it is not enough to click on the enemy. Every attack must be aimed and a dodge must be executed by us. Along with the TPP come surprises such as mobs and players emerging from the edge of a cliff or attacking from above.

Predecessor vs Paragon - differences

The ambition of Predecessor developers was to give a second chance to Paragon, which had the misfortune to be released at a similar time to the rapidly gaining popularity Fortnite. As a result, the Omeda team's game offers a very similar experience to Epic Games' title. The changes mainly boil down to modifying the audiovisual layer (including a new soundtrack and animation system), adding new maps and making various improvements to the original. For example, the developers have modified the item and skill system, among which we will find many new upgrades.

Technical aspects and other

Like Paragon, Predecessor uses 3D graphics based on the Unreal Engine, a proprietary technology developed by Epic Games. The game is available as a free-to-play production.
