Quartet is a jRPG, telling four different stories, which intertwine and connect with each other over time. The game features an interesting turn-based combat system, allowing to juggle between main and reserve characters, creating long attack chains in the process.
Something Classic is an independent American game development studio, which gained worldwide recognition thanks to the game Shadows of Adam. The next work of this team is a project titled Quartet described here. It is also a jRPG type production, inspired by the classic genre of the 16-bit era.
In Quartet we watch the action from a bird's eye view.
The game transports us to a fantasy universe and allows us to follow four stories. We have the opportunity to unravel the mystery behind a series of train robberies, solve the riddle of a mysterious deck of cards giving visions of another world, face a fleet of airships traversing the Empire, or make an unexpected discovery of magical power in one of the characters.
We can explore individual stories in any order. Over time, they intertwine with each other, which consequently leads to the merge.
Quartet gives us a total of 8 characters at our disposal, in whose skin we explore locations, meet their inhabitants, complete quests, and also defeat opponents. Exploration involves the necessity of climbing ropes or discovering secret paths and shortcuts. The adventure leads us through the steampunk city of Leornin, dense forests on the barbarian border, the Tyche marshes, or the underground warehouses of Seren.
The battles take place in turn-based mode, and at any given moment there can be four characters on the battlefield, while the rest are on a kind of "reserve bench". The game allows us to switch the chosen hero to one of the reserve ones at any time. The ability to perform subsequent moves and launch attacks is determined by the number of action points (AP) available for a given character. Those who are in reserve regenerate these points faster. One of the keys to success is skillfully juggling characters, creating long chains of attacks.
The two-dimensional graphic design of Quartet was made using pixel art technique.
