Raiden Legacy, released on AND, iOS and PC, is a compilation of four classic top-down shooters. In addition to the protoplast of the whole series - Raiden - the package includes three spin-offs of this cult shooter. The effort of remastering these four titles was undertaken by DotEmu studio, specializing in remasters of various classic games.
Raiden, originally released in 1990 on coin-up machines, was, next to Raptor: Call of the Shadows, the second most popular 2D shooter with vertical scrolling - especially among PC players, who didn't have access to many productions in this genre. The game offered simple mechanics focused on eliminating groups of opponents appearing in the so-called waves. Our fighter was initially equipped with the basic tools of extermination, such as a rifle and a bomb launcher. By collecting bonuses found during the game, our ship could be upgraded and armed with more and more effective weapons.
In addition to the first installment of the series, the set also includes three spin-offs of the series released in 1996-98: Raiden Fighters, Raiden Fighter 2 and Raiden Fighters Jet. All games, created by the author of the original, Seibu Kaihatsu, offer similar gameplay. Apart from small graphics changes, more varied levels and a few changes introduced to the mechanics of the game, we are still dealing with classic, 2D top-down shooter.
Raiden Legacy offers new gameplay modes in addition to its customized graphics. Besides the classic arcade, where we can compete on one screen alone or in cooperation with a friend, we have a mission mode and training mode. Players can choose between medium and high difficulty levels. We also can switch off the auto shooting system and have full manual control over the turrets.
The soundtracks from Raiden Fighters, Raiden Fighters 2 and Raiden Fighters Jet have been remastered.
