Repose is an adventure action game with survival horror elements, featuring a unique retro setting. The development of this game was led by independent Hungarian developer Bozo Attila Bertold.

Gameplay

In Repose the action is presented from a first-person perspective (FPP).

Main mission

During the game, we become a freshly baked employee of an enigmatic company and end up in a mysterious facility, where our primary task is to find oxygen cylinders scattered around the area.

Exploration and potential dangers

We move around the facility in a characteristic manner. While exploring it, we must constantly be on guard, as dangers lurk here at every step. The main threat comes from enemies, with whom we can fight using firearms (pistol) and melee weapons (axe), as well as set traps for them.

The main pros of the game

  • Art Style and Atmosphere: The game has been praised for its unique black-and-white pixel art and atmospheric sound design, which contribute to a haunting and immersive experience.
  • Clever Puzzle Mechanics: Players appreciate the innovative energy management system that requires careful planning of each move, making the gameplay feel strategic and rewarding.
  • Intriguing Story: Despite its brevity, many players found the story engaging, with a cryptic narrative that invites interpretation and exploration of its themes.
  • Short Playtime: The game's short length (around 2 hours) is seen as a positive aspect for those looking for a compact experience that doesn't overstay its welcome.

The main cons of the game

  • Misleading Presentation: Many players felt the game misrepresented itself as a horror dungeon crawler, when in reality it is more of a puzzle maze game with limited combat and exploration.
  • Limited Enemy Variety: The game features very few enemy types, which can lead to repetitive gameplay and a lack of challenge after initial encounters.
  • Frustrating Mechanics: The trial-and-error nature of the game, combined with a lack of clear communication regarding mechanics, can lead to frustration, especially when players die and must restart from distant checkpoints.
  • Lack of Exploration: Players noted that the linear pathing and lack of meaningful exploration opportunities detracted from the experience, as there are few rewards for straying from the main route.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • More Exploration Opportunities: Users expressed a desire for additional lore and environmental storytelling to encourage exploration beyond the main objectives.
  • Improved Save System: The reliance on save codes instead of modern save systems was criticized as archaic and inconvenient, with players wishing for more traditional save options.
  • Diverse Gameplay Mechanics: Some players felt the game could benefit from more varied gameplay elements, such as different enemy types or more complex puzzles to solve.
  • Deeper Storytelling: While the story was appreciated, many users felt it could have been fleshed out more, with additional context or character development to enhance player investment.

Summary

  • Overall, while REPOSE has garnered praise for its aesthetic and innovative mechanics, it has also faced criticism for its misleading presentation and lack of depth in certain areas.
