White Night Description
White Night for PC, PS4 and etc. is a third-person survival horror game designed with unique black-and-white visual style. It was inspired by works of Alfred Hitchcock, and the first entry in Alone in the Dark series. The game was developed by independent French team of OSome studio. The members of this team have previously worked on such games as Heavy Rain, Remember Me, Beyond: Two Souls and Obscure series. White Night’s melancholic story with psychological horror’s features arose some interest during the production, earning it nominations on e.g. Game Connections 2013 and GDC 2014 conference.
Plot
The story of White Night takes us to late 30’s of 20th century, to an old family mansion that was the scene of horrible events. The protagonist ends up trapped in it and must solve many puzzles that require using the mechanics of dark and light. Mysterious creatures that lurk in the dark are his main enemies, and the hero must learn utilizing various sources of light if he wants to survive the night.
Game mechanics
Developers of White Night for PC, PS4 and etc. managed to combine many of their inspirations, ranging from games and movies to fantasy novels. Gameplay itself resembles first entries in Alone in the Dark series, although the usage of light is reminiscent of newer games, especially Alan Wake. As we try to escape the mansion, we explore rooms, search for necessary items and solve puzzles. We must also watch out for hostile ghosts, who will instantly kill the protagonist if they touch him.
Technical aspects
White Night stands out from other games mostly due to its visuals, using only black and white colors in conjunction with lighting, shades and a lot of symbolism and references.
