Resident Evil 4 Expansion Pack
Release Date: April 7, 2023
The Mercenaries is a free expansion to the survival horror game Resident Evil 4. It introduces a new game mode revolving around combat, killing enemies quickly and achieving high scores.
Resident Evil 4: The Mercenaries is a free DLC to Resident Evil 4, a remake of the iconic 2005 survival horror game. It was developed by Capcom.
The DLC re-introduces a new mode to RE4, that being already iconic The Mercenaries. The mode emphasizes sheer action, focusing on killing hordes of enemies and achieving high scores. There's a time limit on each map, which can be extended by killing foes. There are also combos, initiated by killing several enemies in a short period of time, which activate score multipliers and add more time.
The Mercenaries offers three maps (Village, Castle and Island), each based on a location from the base game's campaign. Each battlefield was redesigned to fit the mode's action focus. There are also plenty of new features to make use of in combat, such as cannons in the Castle and turrets on the Island.
The DLC offers a roster of playable characters, each with unique gear. At first, the only character available is Leon S. Kennedy, the main protagonist of the campaign. The other characters (Luis Serra, Jack Krauser and Hunk) can be unlocked by reaching score thresholds on specific maps. Each playable character has access to the so-called Mayhem Mode, which temporarily increases their offensive capabilities. It can be activated by filling a special meter, which rises automatically, but its growth can be accelerated by killing foes.
Just like the base game, the DLC is only playable in singleplayer.
The Mercenaries is not a standalone expansion and requires the base version of Resident Evil 4 to function.

Resident Evil is a series of Japanese survival horrors published by Capcom. Shinji Mikami and Tokuro Fujiwara are mainly responsible for its creation. The series started on March 22, 1996, with the release of Resident Evil (also known as Biohazard) on the PlayStation console. It was during its marketing campaign that the term survival horror was coined. The prototype of the series is the game Sweet Home released in 1989, based on the film of the same name. Fujiwara himself was responsible for it, and many elements, such as QTE sequences or inventory management, were transferred to the Biohazard series. Since then, it has grown steadily, gaining more game installments, as well as movie, animation, comic book and novel adaptations.
