An adventure game with elements of an agricultural RPG. Ritual of Raven involves working with plants, but instead of getting our hands dirty we can rely on the help of magical companions. The game also allows us to explore an unstable fantasy world, accompanied by a raven friend.
Games dedicated to agriculture have accustomed us to the fact that we deal with cultivating the land, caring for plants, and harvesting crops on our own. Developers from the independent German studio Spellgarden Games decided to change this state of affairs. Their project, titled Ritual of Raven, is an adventure game with clearly outlined elements of farming RPGs and it does not allow us to get our hands dirty. Instead, we use magical helpers called Arcana Constructs to work in the field.
In Ritual of Raven we watch the action in an isometric view.
The gameplay revolves around growing plants. If we were to handle this ourselves we would deprive it of its magical properties, so we must use the services of the aforementioned Arcana Constructs. Making use of the mystical deck of cards, we conjure these helpers to take care of plowing the land, sowing, cultivating crops and harvesting for us. Over time, we gain access to additional creatures that we can employ to work in the garden.
It's worth keeping in mind that our crops are shaped by the phases of the moon. A special temple awaits discovery in the game world, which allows us to control and adapt it to our own needs. When exploring the land, we also get to know its inhabitants, with whom we can talk, learning about the problems that bother them, as well as trade with them and supply them with various ingredients.
The icing on the cake is the ability to decorate the game world using furniture and cosmetic elements, which we buy in the Pistachio store. Over time, the Constructs produce various crystals for us, which we use in magical rituals. We also collect artifacts (which we fish out from other worlds, throwing grabbers into portals), and we also fill our library.
In Ritual of Raven we end up in a fantasy world after passing through one of the unstable portals connecting magical lands. Wanting to restore the lost balance to this place, as well as help the witch Sage in finding her pet - Flufferstoop, we need to fill the Book of Shadows and find the Portal Lords. We are not doomed to a lonely journey, as we are accompanied by a Raven helper.
The graphic design of Ritual of Raven was made in pixel art technique.

LadiesGamers.com: by Lynne Newey
Ritual of Raven is a quest fest and a collecting paradise. The story bobs along like the cheeky raven, moving from one place to another, all guided, but with no time pressure. Creating enchantments to control the adorable pot-like Arcana Constructs is definitely a highlight, and although I have a couple of niggles with the game, overall, it’s cast its spell and I’m totally bewitched by it.
Thumb Culture: 4 / 5
Ritual of Raven is a delightfully charming game that celebrates the wonders of both the arcane and the feeling of community, infused with the intricacies of coding. Colourful and cosy, it’s perfect for settling down for a quiet night in. Puzzles and conversations could be explored a little more, but with playtime in double figures and a unique take on farming, there’s enough to keep you coming back for more. Thus it receives the Thumb Culture Gold Award, charged under the sun for a vitality boost!
So Many Games: 4.5 / 5 by Christopher Lannoo
Ritual of Raven is a much-needed refresh of the farming sim genre. It manages to mostly avoid the trappings of similar games while adding some great touches of their own. The writing is fun and engaging, the gameplay is addictive – I don’t even know how many times I just kept on playing because I needed to do ‘just one more thing’ – and its world is gorgeous. I had high hopes for this game, and Spellgarden Games has duly delivered.
