River City Saga: Three Kingdoms is a spin-off of a beat'em up series begun in 1986, titled Kunio-Kun (known in the West as River City). The game was developed by APlus Games and published by Arc System Works.
River City Saga: Three Kingdoms is set in the Three Kingdoms Era, a period when China was divided into three hostile countries. The main character of the game is Kunio, who found himself in the middle of the turmoil. He is not the only character known from other games under this banner who appears here in completely new role; others appear here as, among others, local warlords or famous commanders. The game allows us to take part in numerous events known from the pages of history - from the Yellow Turbans Rebellion to the Battle of Red Cliffs. However, the story is kept in a humorous tone.
River City Saga: Three Kingdoms is a side-scrolling action game. In terms of gameplay, it doesn't differ from what we've become accustomed to in the Kunio-kun series. Moving through colorful stages (the list includes both picturesque landscapes and a variety of villages and towns), we mainly fight with enemies. We eliminate them using a wide range of cold weapons (we can buy better weapons from the merchants) and making spectacular combos.
River City Saga: Three Kingdoms can be played solo or in the company of up to three people. The game offers a special co-op mode, called Record of Three Kingdoms Heroes: Red Cliffs Chapter, in which players together put down hosts of enemies and eliminate bosses.
River City Saga: Three Kingdoms features simple, yet colorful and clear graphics made in pixel art technique. The game allows to put a special filter on the image that imitates CRT screen.
