Rootbound

Rootbound is an action adventure game developed by the independent studio Brainlag Games. This is a German development team based in Essen. It was founded in 2024 by former employees of Piranha Bytes, who previously worked on games from the Gothic, Risen and Elex series.

Gameplay

Smart backpack

Our faithful companion is a backpack that is an intelligent form of life. Although it is not able to talk to us, we can still count on its help. In certain situations, the backpack can throw us items that it deems useful at a given moment. However, we must be careful, as its nature does not escape the attention of opponents, which may cause them to start attacking it.

Opponents and other dangers

Speaking of enemies - we engage in dynamic duels with them, primarily fighting in close combat. We must also pay attention to other threats, with rain being the source of the plague ravaging the island. The light coming from the torches (supposedly a source of magical powers) and bonfires can protect us from it, but when it starts to rain, the more sensible solution is to find a safe place.

Campsites, puzzles and island residents

Lighting fires is an opportunity to regenerate depleted health, as well as to use the materials collected along the way to create useful equipment and improve already owned items.
