SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered is a refreshed version of the jRPG from the year 2000. It is a sequel to the two years younger SaGa Frontier. The game is the result of a collaboration between Square Enix, the company overseeing the brand, and Bullets studio.

Gameplay

In SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered we watch the action from a bird's eye view. During the game, we explore the game world and get to know its inhabitants, we carry out the quests set before us, and we also gather a team and fight opponents.

The battles take place in turn-based mode, and we face both single enemies (whom we fight one on one) and small groups of them (our entire team confronts them). There is also room here for proper battles involving large armies. As we progress, we develop characters, which allows us to face increasingly bigger challenges over time.

I’m not sure why Square Enix has decided to become so prolific with the SaGa property. Three games in a single 12-month timespan is the most ambitious release schedule we’ve ever seen for it. But I’m also not complaining. SaGa has always been something of the forgotten child of Square Enix’s JRPG properties. With any luck, that’s changing now, and a whole bunch of people are going to realise just how good Frontier 2 here is for the first time.

MonsterVine: 4 / 5 by Frank Wood

SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered lets the best parts of the original game shine, while sanding out some of the rough edges that can detract from the player experience. The story shines as one of the best ones in the franchise, and the addition of new types of combat keeps things feeling pretty fresh. This is a full featured remaster, and I hope we continue to see the SaGa series get this kind of love and care from Square Enix; it deserves it.

Nintendo Life: 8 / 10 by Trent Cannon

SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered is a solid port of a great JRPG from more than two decades ago. It keeps what was special about the original - the story and the characters - and adds to it with new plot elements. While we weren't in love with the combat mechanics or the exploration puzzles, they don't get in the way of a great story. Just like we don't love everything about our family, we could overlook the game's shortcomings to focus on what made it memorable.

The main pros of the game

  • High-Quality Remaster: The remaster maintains the charm of the original with improved visuals, particularly the watercolor graphics, and includes a well-composed soundtrack by Masashi Hamauzu.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: Numerous enhancements make the game more accessible, such as better gear stats breakdown, the ability to recover LP at inns, and the introduction of a parameter inheritance system that allows players to pass down stats between characters.
  • New Content: The remaster adds new scenarios and events that expand on character stories, providing closure to some plotlines and enhancing the overall narrative experience.
  • Engaging Story: The game features a compelling narrative that spans multiple generations, with themes of legacy, war, and personal growth, making it a standout in the SaGa series.
  • Combat Systems: Players appreciate the unique combat mechanics, including the sparking system for learning new skills and the inclusion of different battle modes (duels and army warfare).

The main cons of the game

  • Uneven Visuals: Some users criticize the upscaling of backgrounds as inconsistent, with certain areas appearing blurry or poorly rendered compared to others.
  • Complex Mechanics: The game retains its challenging nature, which may be off-putting for newcomers. The lack of clear direction and some obscure mechanics (like the sparking system) can lead to confusion and frustration.
  • Difficult Gameplay: While many appreciate the challenge, some players find the game can be punishing, with potential for "soft-locking" if players are not careful with character choices and progression.
  • Limited Replayability: Some reviews mention that the game can feel linear and may not offer as much replay value compared to other entries in the SaGa series.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • More Streamlined Mechanics: Users expressed a desire for clearer explanations of game mechanics, particularly for newcomers who may find the systems daunting.
  • Improved Visual Consistency: Some players hoped for a more thorough overhaul of character sprites and backgrounds to match modern standards of remastering.
  • Enhanced Exploration: While the game retains its open-ended nature, some players wished for a more integrated exploration mechanic, as the game can feel restrictive in terms of accessing certain areas.
  • More Depth in Combat Systems: Suggestions were made for more complexity in the army battle system, which some felt was too simplistic compared to the rest of the gameplay.

Summary

  • Overall, SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered is celebrated for its narrative depth, improved mechanics, and nostalgic value, while also facing criticism regarding its visual execution and complexity for new players.
