Sanatorium: A Mental Asylum Simulator is a mix of adventure and simulation set in the 1920s. Players assume the role of a journalist disguised as a psychiatrist within the titular mental hospital. Your tasks involve diagnosing and treating patients, either by adhering to the established rules of conduct or by choosing to experiment with their treatment.
In the first half of the 20th century, psychiatry was still one of the less developed fields of medicine. Some of the methods used at that time were experimental in nature and, from today's perspective, may evoke dread. Based on these events, the independent studio Zeitglas developed its production set in the year 1923. It is a blend of point & click adventure games and simulations, with the highly evocative title Sanatorium: A Mental Asylum Simulator.
In Sanatorium: A Mental Asylum Simulator, the game takes place on almost entirely static screens depicting specific rooms, characters, and objects (like our desk cluttered with papers).
We primarily focus on diagnosing and treating diverse patients. The game allows us to study their files, and we can supplement the information contained in them by subjecting them to various tests. Acquiring knowledge about specific cases is important because it allows us to select appropriate treatment methods.
Information about symptoms, as well as methods of tests and examinations, is presented here in the form of cards, which we update as we make progress. It is up to us whether we follow the rules or let our imagination run wild and, following the path of some of our colleagues in the profession, decide to experiment.
As we progress, we get to know not only more patients, but also other characters residing in Castle Woods, including the medical staff. Staying in this place is also an opportunity to learn more about the main character. Our actions and the choices we make influence the further course of the story and the future of this place.
In Sanatorium: A Mental Asylum Simulator we take on the role of a journalist who, disguised as a doctor, enters the infamous Castle Woods psychiatric hospital to uncover its sinister mystery. To achieve this, the protagonist must not only conduct their own investigation, gathering data about the events taking place here, but also (and perhaps most importantly) convincingly pretend to be an experienced psychiatrist.
The graphic design of Sanatorium: A Mental Asylum Simulator is maintained in a cartoonish yet unsettling style.
