Launched in 2004, the comic book series titled Scott Pilgrim, by Canadian artist Bryan Lee O'Malley, has seen adaptations over the years in the form of film, series and video games.
One of the latter is a walking brawler (beat'em up) titled Scott Pilgrim EX, developed by Tribute Games studio, whose portfolio includes such projects as Mercenary Kings and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge. The author of the original, however, oversaw its storyline.
In Scott Pilgrim EX we watch the action from the side. The production puts at our disposal a number of playable characters, each with their own fighting style, range of attacks and set of strengths and weaknesses. In addition to Scott Pilgrim, we will find here, among others, such personalities as Ramona Flowers, Matthew Patel (who can, among other things, distract enemies and set traps for them) or the mechanical Robot-01.
In the sk?ra of the chosen fighter, we make our way through Toronto presented as a network of interconnected locations. Performing tasks, we try to bring order to the metropolis, after it was overrun by three gangs - vegans, robots and demons.
Along the way, we mainly deal with slapping the faces of opponents, which we do by fighting in close and ranged combat and using a variety of weapons. The title allows you to combine attacks in combos, derive joint moves with other characters, as well as make use of powerful special attacks. Although skirmishes with ranked opponents are the daily bread here, we also regularly face powerful bosses.
As we progress, we develop characters with special badges that provide stat bonuses and other boosts.
Scott Pilgrim EX can be played solo or in co-op mode for up to four people. You can play with other players over the Internet or on a shared screen.
Scott Pilgrim EX features pixel art graphics and is accompanied by a soundtrack combining 8-bit and rock sounds, created by the Anamanaguchi band.

Game Ratings for Scott Pilgrim EX Video Game.
Checkpoint Gaming: 5.5 / 10
Scott Pilgrim EX is nothing more than satisfactory. Brawling through dozens of adversaries can be quite enticing, especially with a friend. However, every other element falls flat with areas, enemies, bosses and levelling ending up a big regression from other contemporary beat ’em ups. Likewise, fans of Scott Pilgrim will be pleased by the plethora of visual tributes. But the narrative and dialogue of EX come across as purely referential and lack a heart of their own.
PC Gamer: 76 / 100 by Justin Wagner
Scott Pilgrim EX is a palatable fresh helping of retro beatdown goodness, but it's too brief and easygoing to deliver more fun than its inspirations or its best contemporaries.
Daily Mirror: 4 / 5 by Aaron Potter
While the boss difficulty spikes can be annoying and some references are often at risk of being too deep, it’s safe to say I’m in lesbians with Scott Pilgrim EX.
