Severed Steel is a dynamic first-person shooter (FPS), in which the action runs at breakneck speed and the heroine deals with hordes of enemies in an impressive way. It is a debut of an independent team Greylock Studio, and Digerati supervised the project.
Set in an unspecified future, Severed Steel presents a cyberpunk vision in which the world is ruled by powerful corporations. The game's protagonist is the titular Steel, who lost her arm due to an accident caused by one of these megacorporations - EdenSys. Crippled and abandoned, Steel swears revenge on the company. Thus begins her mission, in which she intends not only to return the favor to EdenSys, but also to free other people imprisoned by the company.
In many ways Severed Steel has more in common with classic FPSs than with typical modern shooters. So there is no question of moving slowly from cover to cover or giving orders to subordinates. It's all about eliminating enemies quickly, dodging bullets and moving around locations at a dizzying pace using spectacular stunts: running along walls, sliding under furniture or enemies, etc. The whole thing may bring to mind associations with, among others, SUPERHOT, especially since the scoring system promoting rapid and effective dealing with enemies was also included here.
The game enforces this style of gameplay through several mechanics. As long as Steel remains on the move, she is almost invulnerable to enemy projectiles. She also has a bullet time (or slowmotion mode), but the associated skill bar is only restored after an accurate hit. What's more, Steel's lack of a single hand means she can't reload her weapon, forcing her to rip it out of the hands of enemy mercenaries (sometimes literally).
Severed Steel also promotes creativity in combat. This is partly due to the artificial intelligence of enemies, who act in groups and adapt to the player's actions without the use of scripting. The destruction system also does its job. Voxel-based locations can be destroyed at will, allowing you to surprise enemies hidden behind a wall or a floor above, as long as Steel has the necessary firepower. The heroine can also throw weapons she's holding and deliver kicks.
Severed Steel is strictly a single player game - the authors have not included any form of online mode. accompanying accurate shots or even fast movement.
The almost sterile locations of Severed Steel are not rich in detail, but they are also not as simple as, for example, in SUPERHOT. The 3D graphics were designed using Unreal Engine and Voxel Plugin technologies and present a high level, while giving the game a distinctive style. This is also emphasised by a strong electronic soundtrack, as well as various visual effects

The game runs near-flawlessly on Switch aside from a few levels near the end (that being said, you’ll be in slo-mo for the majority of the game anyway). However, the two biggest issues with the game rear their heads here. Games like this typically have near instantaneous restarts to ensure the action is always moving. Severed Steel’s load times aren't obnoxiously long by any means, but just long enough to add to the frustration of losses. The other (and biggest) issue is the complete lack of gyro-aiming, which — especially for a game this fast-paced — feels like a large oversight. But still, we’re talking about a game where you can throw your gun at someone, slo-mo, dive over their head, steal another from their back pocket, then blast them with it. Which is pretty rad.

Quite simply Severed Steel is one of the most downright entertaining shooters to come out this year. Sure it doesn't boast the most comprehensive offering from a content perspective and genre fiends looking for a token narrative to go with their serving of face-gunning may well be disappointed, but Severed Steel bends and in some cases breaks the traditionally rigid rules of the FPS genre to often giddy effect. The end result is the sort of gloriously freewheeling, acrobatic first-person shooting extravaganza which aims to demonstrate that innovation in the genre doesn't have to just begin and end at the the gun clasped tightly in your hands.

Severed Steel assaults many of your senses and rewards your bullet dodging, slow motion ballet dancing with satisfying kills while caressing your eyes and ears with the striking visuals and soundtrack it presents to you.
