Digital Chumps: 5.5 / 10 by Ben Sheene

Shadow Labyrinth is an earnest attempt at transmogrifying Pac-Man into something more than he is. While a futuristic Metroidvania makes as much sense as anything else, the game fails in many key ways that keep the genre engaging and not an absolute slog.

GameSpew: 6 / 10 by Kim Snaith

Pac-Man in a Metroidvania game? Yeah – Shadow Labyrinth is an intriguing use of a much-loved IP, but the end result leaves a little to be desired. There's fun to be had here, but frustrating design choices, such as a lack of checkpoints and healing options, mean it's a middling Metroidvania, outshined by plenty others in the genre.

The main cons of the game

  • Level Design Issues: Some players criticized the level design for being convoluted or filled with empty spaces, leading to a feeling of bloat and frustration during exploration.

  • Improved Storytelling: While some enjoyed the lore, others found it poorly executed or confusing, suggesting a need for clearer storytelling and character development.
  • Better Integration of Mechanics: Some players felt that the unique Pac-Man mechanics could have been better integrated into the gameplay to feel more cohesive rather than as separate, less engaging segments.

Summary

  • In summary, Shadow Labyrinth is seen as a mixed bag, with a blend of enjoyable elements and significant areas for improvement, particularly in pacing, controls, and overall design. It appeals to fans of challenging Metroidvanias and those who appreciate Namco's legacy but may frustrate players looking for a polished experience.
