Shotgun Cop Man is a crazy action platformer in which we play as the titular cop going to hell to arrest Satan himself. The game was developed by the independent studio DeadToast Entertainment, which also has the genre-related My Friend Pedro in its portfolio.

Gameplay

In Shotgun Cop Man we watch the action from the side.

Hellish journey

We explore hell in the game, jumping on platforms, avoiding abysses and other terrain obstacles, dodging traps, making use of trampolines or hooking a rope onto environmental elements and swinging in the air.

This is not the end, as our cop must also face hordes of enemies. The hero confronts both the ordinary inhabitants of the devilish domain and the powerful demons serving as bosses.

Using infernal guns

The protagonist makes use of firearms on the battlefield. Apart from the titular shotgun, there is also a pair of pistols on his forearm, which he can shoot independently in different directions.

Console Creatures: 8 / 10 by Bobby Pashalidis

Shotgun Cop Man is not something I expected to enjoy as much as I did, yet nearly 150 levels proved me wrong. The moment-to-moment gameplay is so well done, and having to plan my moves while dodging and fighting demons is a blast.

VDGMS: 7.5 / 10 by Darren Andrew

Shotgun Cop Man costs six cents per stage and at this value proposition, it's hard to be upset at its shortcomings. Shotgun Cop Man is exactly what you would expect to get if you put Devolver Digital in a blender with Deadtoast, the studio behind 2019’s My Friend Pedro. The platforming is satisfying, addicting and refined, but best enjoyed in short sessions. The bosses are unique, but there is too much monotony in between. There are 162 stages, but there is a lack of variety across many facets of the experience. For every pro, there is a con, but Shotgun Cop Man isn’t here to win awards. He’s here to kick ass and take names on his quest to arrest satan in the bowels of Hell. Shotgun Cop Man is aware of what it is and at this price point is precisely what you expect and need it to be: A fast, frenetic action game with refined gameplay. Unfortunately, it's a little shallow on depth, variety and isn't the follow up to My Friend Pedro that was expected.

Gamer Escape: 7 / 10 by Mike Thomas

I enjoyed my time with Shotgun Cop Man but, where I couldn’t stop replaying My Friend Pedro, I don’t see myself returning to this one. Shotgun Cop Man is frantic, fun, and funny. It is also repetitive, irritating, and doesn’t separate itself from the pack. What it does have is enough charm and sharp gameplay to make itself a worthy pickup.

The main pros of the game

  • Fast-Paced Action: Players enjoyed the high-speed gameplay and the adrenaline rush associated with navigating levels quickly while defeating enemies.
  • Level Design: The game features over 150 handcrafted levels that introduce new mechanics and challenges, keeping the experience fresh and engaging.
  • Visual Style and Audio: The minimalist 2D graphics and punchy sound design were praised for complementing the chaotic gameplay.
  • Replayability: The inclusion of challenges (like speedruns and no-hit runs) for each level, along with a level editor, enhances replayability and community engagement.
  • Affordable Price: Many players felt the game provided good value for its $10 price tag, especially with the amount of content available.

The main cons of the game

  • Difficulty Issues: Several players noted that the game was too easy, with many completing levels and challenges without much effort. The final boss was highlighted as one of the few challenging aspects.
  • Repetitive Music: The soundtrack was criticized for being monotonous and lacking variety, which detracted from the overall experience for some players.
  • Underwhelming Boss Fights: Boss encounters were often viewed as simple and not reflective of the game's overall complexity, leading to disappointment.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Narrative Depth: Many players felt the story was minimal and lacked depth compared to the developer's previous title, "My Friend Pedro." There were calls for more engaging dialogue and character development.
  • Difficulty Options: Some users expressed a desire for adjustable difficulty settings to cater to different skill levels, as the game was perceived as too accessible.
  • Skip Cutscenes: Players wanted the ability to skip cutscenes, especially during retries of the final boss, to avoid repetitive viewing.
  • More Enemy Variety: Users suggested that the game could benefit from a broader range of enemy types and behaviors to enhance combat dynamics.

Summary

  • Overall, "Shotgun Cop Man" has been well-received for its innovative mechanics and fast-paced gameplay, but it faces criticism regarding difficulty balance, narrative depth, and audio repetition.
