The RPG genre has it that the productions representing it can both allow us to experience great adventures and put us in the center of more mundane stories. The latter path is followed by Sister Ray, the work of independent studio The Growing Stones, which has in its portfolio the warmly received adventure The Mildew Children.
In Sister Ray, the action is viewed from the side. The main protagonist of the game is the titular Ray, who is an addicted artist taking care of her younger sister. During the gameplay we accompany her in her daily life, helping her make ends meet, develop her drawing skills, as well as satisfy her hunger and find a way to break out of the loop of addiction. At the same time, we must do what we can to help her keep her addiction at bay.
The girl visits locations such as a bar, a school and a park. Ray can create drawings both at home and in the open air. The protagonist earns a living by selling her works, and as her skills grow, she gains new opportunities in this field, dreaming of breaking through to the exhibition. Drawing, meanwhile, is only one of the things Ray has to take care of. Others include raising her sister and maintaining relationships with friends.
Ray's life isn't strewn with r?g?s. Above all, time works against her , which is pushed forward by every action. Managing it is at the core of the mechanics, and its scarcity forces her to make difficult choices about what it will be spent on. In addition, the girl's friendships are fragile, as is her health.
The biggest enemy of the latter is the addiction with which our protégée struggles. Ray functions on the verge of self-destruction, and she has to deal with her addiction by satisfying her hunger and/or looking for a way to get rid of it. Otherwise, he risks poisoning himself, getting into trouble with the law and even death. At the same time, she has to hide her problems from her model sister and the rest of her environment.
The protagonist achieves her goals in a variety of ways. Depending on how we guide her development, she can use eloquence or rely entirely on her appearance. It is also important to keep her composure so that at a crucial moment her emotions do not take over and thwart her efforts on a given topic.
The latter is all the more difficult because the hunger afflicting the heroine grows by the hour, eventually overshadowing all aspects of her personality. When, on the other hand, all else fails and she runs out of money, there is nothing left for her but to carry out pickpocketing.
The two-dimensional graphics of the Sister Ray game are kept in a cartoon style, which fits with its theme.
