Slitterhead is an action adventure game with horror elements, developed by the Japanese Bokeh Game Studio. This is a development team founded by Keiichiro Toyama - the creator of the original Silent Hill game, as well as titles from the Siren series and the warmly received Gravity Rush series.

Plot

The action of Slitterhead takes place in the city of Kowlong. During the game we play as Hyoki, a creature without both physical form and memory. The goal that guides us is to exterminate the titular Slitterheads - monstrous creatures hiding under human forms. We can achieve this by taking control over encountered individuals, starting with "Rarities" who are most compatible with us.

Like a bloody blade worn down by a few too many battles, Slitterhead grows increasingly dull over time and ultimately just doesn’t cut it.

While it has some clever ideas, Slitterhead never realises its potential, feeling like it would have benefited from more time in development.

Screen Rant: 6 / 10 by Lee D'Amato

When it's good, it's really good, but it's hard to recommend wholeheatedly with all that confusion and tedium. Hardcore Siren fans who have been longing for another entry in the defunct franchise will certainly like it. Players with open minds and a lot of patience should certainly check it out. Slitterhead has a lot of great ideas: I just wish it was better at doling them out consistently.

The main pros of the game

  • Unique Concept: The game features an innovative body-swapping mechanic, allowing players to possess different characters (Rarities) with unique abilities, which adds depth to combat and exploration.
  • Engaging Atmosphere: The setting, inspired by Kowloon Walled City, creates a captivating and immersive environment that enhances the horror experience.
  • Creative Storytelling: The narrative is intriguing, filled with twists and themes of identity and morality, reminiscent of classic horror titles. It encourages players to piece together the plot, which is a hallmark of Toyama's previous works.
  • Soundtrack: Composed by Akira Yamaoka, the music is well-received and contributes significantly to the game's overall atmosphere.
  • Challenging Combat: While some find it janky, the combat system, which includes parrying and utilizing different character abilities, can be satisfying once mastered.

The main cons of the game

  • Technical Limitations: The graphics are often described as dated or underwhelming, with some character models appearing "plastic" and lacking detail, which detracts from immersion.
  • Repetitive Gameplay: Many players noted that the game can become repetitive, particularly due to the limited enemy variety and the need to replay missions to progress the story.
  • Clunky Mechanics: Some combat mechanics, especially the parry system and camera controls, can feel awkward and lead to frustrating gameplay experiences.
  • Lack of Voice Acting: Most dialogue is presented through text with minimal voice acting, which can feel jarring and detracts from character engagement.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Variety in Enemies and Bosses: Players expressed a desire for more diverse enemy designs and boss encounters to keep the gameplay fresh and engaging.
  • Deeper Investigative Mechanics: Some reviews suggested that the investigative elements could be expanded, with players wanting more interactive and engaging detective mechanics rather than simple fetch quests or scripted events.
  • Less Hand-Holding: Several users mentioned that the game often feels too linear and guided, wishing for more freedom to explore and experiment with the mechanics without constant prompts or restrictions.

Summary

  • Overall, Slitterhead is seen as a unique and ambitious title that, despite its flaws, offers an engaging experience for those who appreciate innovative gameplay and storytelling in the horror genre. It may not appeal to everyone, especially those seeking polished AAA titles, but it has the potential to become a cult classic among fans of experimental games.
